Hyundai iMT on Creta Verna and others?

Hyundai iMT has been all the buzz for the past many weeks. Kia first introduced the iMT in concept from but Hyundai was the first manufacturer in India to utilize it. Hyundai launched its new iMT transmission with Hyundai Venue’s turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol engine which produces around 120hp. Will other Hyundai cars get this transmission too? iMT on other cars

iMT transmission may next be seen on the Kia Sonet. The company is set to reveal the car on August 7 and iMT is a highly likely feature.  The Hyundai Tucson was launched recently in India and that is when they revealed future plans for iMT.

Hyundai may wait for the consumer feedback but will launch the iMT transmission with Hyundai Creta and Hyundai Verna. Both Creta and Verna have turbocharged engines similar to the Venue and may receive the iMT soon. Hyundai’s iMT will be a great addition to Grand i10 Nios, Aura and upcoming Elite i20.  iMT is a low-cost alternative to automatic transmission where you don’t need to operate the clutch. 

What is iMT in short?

The only basic thing you need to remember is that iMT is a MANUAL TRANSMISSION. There are gears which you can manually shift in the car. But there are only two pedals available for use: Accelerator and Brake. iMT sits between a traditional manual transmission and AMT transmission.

What this iMT is not?

Hyundai and Kia’s iMT should not be mixed with the iMT available with Toyota cars. Both are completely different technologies compared to each other. iMT is also not like proper automatic transmissions like CVT or DSG.

Price difference due to iMT

As mentioned above, iMT falls between a traditional manual transmission and AMT transmission. As a result, its price falls between both these transmission options. AMT may cost Rs.30, 000-60,000. As seen above Hyundai’s iMT transmission costs about Rs.20,000 more than traditional manual transmission. This is an economical upgrade and provides ease of usage in city traffic for performance-oriented people too.
