Maruti Jimny Waiting for Clearance!

According to Team-BHP rumour, the Suzuki Jimny CKD kits have been waiting for clearance from the customs. Does this mean that Maruti will bring in this offroader which has to take place of the Maruti Gypsy in the hearts of Indians as the CKD version of Jimny? Find More about it ahead

What is CKD?

CKD is short for Complete knockdown unit. This means that the part of the vehicle comes as sperate packages and then they are assembled here.  It is used to bring in a small number of units from a manufacturing plant that is based somewhere else. CKD has a relatively higher price than if the product was manufactured here but if we consider the number of units that are expected to sell and compare it with the cost of setting up a manufacturing line then the CKD comes out to be a cheaper alternative.

This is usually done for premium vehicles which have a low volume of sales. Also in cars and bigger vehicles, the transport of a CBU(completely built-up) unit is way higher than CKD.

Is the Jimny Coming?

No official announcement from the manufacturer means that we can not tell you for sure. that the Jimny is coming to production here. In recent news, there were deliveries of the Gypsy that were done to the army. You can read more about it here

The report states that Maruti is planning to produce around 5000 units of the Jimny for the export market. This is will be the basis for the 5-door Gypsy that is expected in the Indian market. According to Maruti, the 3-door Gypsy will be expensive and there won’t be that many sales for the same. The Jimny CKD units might be used for the development of the same.

What does the Jimny CKD have?

The Jimny CKD will be powered using a K-series 1.5 petrol engine. The power output is expected at 100bhp and the peak torque will be 130 Nm. A 5-speed manual is expected along with a 4 speed AMT. The serious offroader of all variants will also have a 4×4 manual system called AllGrip System by Suzuki.

Features of Jimny

Now for India, we are expecting a 5-door Jimny but we should not forget about the Mahindra Thar which comes as 3 door car and has already exited the enthusiasts in the Industry. The 5-door is definitely expected to be a much better daily car. It will also have a longer wheelbase offering better space and comfort. The cabin is also expected to have somewhat the touch of premium NEXA cars.

The features will definitely include a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Keyless entry, engine start-stop and Auto headlamps are expected but they might see a skip for maintaining costs.
