Official end to the ‘Spare-Wheel’ ERA
The Indian Government on 21st June 2020 amended the Central Motor Vehicles Rule. This rule was made for the safety of transportation. Find out below if this safety has been compromised. Find out everything below about Official end to the ‘Spare-Wheel’ ERA.
What does the new rule suggest?
The new rule allows car maker to ditch the extra tyre which was made compulsory before also known as spare tyre for puncture situations. This, policymakers said, would do away with the need for an extra tyre and that space could be utilised, especially in case of electric vehicles, to have a battery.
What does the authority have to say?
Ministry of Road Transports and Highways was quoted as saying, “The requirement of the additional tyres has been done away with in such vehicles if provided with the tyre repair kit and TPMS. This is as per the international standards which will enable more space, which may accommodate batteries for EVs etc.”

What is the catch?
Government is not compromising the security so no need to worry. For carmakers to ditch the spare wheel, the car has to be provided with a TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) and a tyre-repair kit which seals any puncture on tubeless tyres. Both these conditions have to be met properly to take benefit of this amendment. This is the main catch of the Official end to the ‘Spare-Wheel’ ERA.
Is there anything else?
The amendments also include a provision for a footrest and mechanism to hold during the ride
The amendments also include for the first time a standard for “external projection” of two-wheelers. This has been prescribed “to reduce lacerations to the pedestrian as well as rider in case of contact with moving vehicle.”
Conclusion
The removal of the spare tyre may be mainly used and benefits EV manufacturers. All the extra space may reduce weight, increase range and also give an area to fit additional batteries.
