The Kia Soul was shown as an EV at the Auto Expo 2020. Recent updates from Kia Market and Sales head tell that they show some interest in actually considering the Kia Soul product for India. But wait there’s more to it ahead. First, let’s get to know what the Kia Soul actually is?

Kia Soul Design

The first thing that we know about the Kia Soul is Design. The design of the car is boxy. The first resemblance that you would notice is that the car looks much like the Maruti Wagon R and the Skoda Yeti. According to the company, it is a crossover design. Now for India bringing a crossover is a tough thing but Kia has an answer to that. When the Kia Soul EV was showcased at the Auto Expo 2020 there was a good response to it. This has led the company to consider Kia plans for India. The design of the Kia Soul from the rear is very interesting and can be a head-turner.

Other things about the design are the dimensions of the car. The Kia Soul measures 4,195 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width and 1,615 mm in height. It has a 2,600 mm wheelbase. But what about the Kia Sonet? Does this mean that the Kia Soul will compete with the Kia Sonet? No, The Kia Soul will sit right in the middle of the Kia Sonet and the Kia Seltos.

This puts the car in the likes of the Nissan Kick and other vehicles in that segment.

Kia Soul Engine

The Kia Soul was actually expected to be an EV in the market but now there is a change of opinion from the company. Looking at the current EV setup in India and the slowdown due to the Coronavirus lockdown it won’t be a good decision to launch an EV in the market.

Instead, the company is considering an IC engine for the Kia soul. Also bringing in the car as a CBU means attracting more taxes. If the car has to be sent to India then it has to be manufactured here.

This does raise new questions like what engine might be offered and will it come as diesel? As of now, there is no answer to that from the company but we can go back to the LA motor show to have an idea of the engines. The Kia Soul International gets the 1.6-litre petrol engine which makes 124 BHP of power. The other engines the 2.0 litre naturally aspirated engine. As of now, it is too early to say what Kia India will offer on this Kia Soul India.

As the company is considering this car for India we think that it will be placed between the Kia Seltos and the Kia Sonnet. This leaves a price bracket of Rs 7.5 lakhs to Rs 10 lakhs. But there are a lot of variables here that play the role of changing the price range. The features that will be offered will also decide how this car will be positioned in the market. Now even if the Kia Soul development for India starts after the lockdown there won’t be any way that we have the production-ready model till the end of next year. The company has a lot of things to cover up right now. The Kia Sonet will be their main focus for now. It will also look at improving the sales of their existing products like the Kia Seltos and Carnival.
