BMW 2 Series – Exactly How Affordable?

BMW has been getting a lot of success in our market lately. The new design language along with revamped interiors have gained popularity in our market. But BMW had never brought in a compact sedan in our market like Mercedes and Audi. Things are about to change with the new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupè. The BMW 2 Series has been launched globally and it is confirmed that this will come to the Indian market as well. We give you all the details about the BMW 2 series below.

BMW 2 Series design

It is based on the new FAAR architecture platform. It will be a front-wheel-drive car which should further lessen the costs of the BMW 2 series. The car is called Gran Coupè as it gets a coupè-like design in terms of a sloping roofline. It does not get any sharp lines or edges that are usually seen with BMWs. It also gets large kidney grilles as is seen with the latest BMWs. The front lights are more bulky than usual. From the rear, it gets the L shaped lamps along with DRLs. From the rear, it looks like a small version of the 8 series that has also been recently launched.

BMW 2 Series pricing and competition

This will be the most important aspect of the car. It is aimed at first-time buyers to the brand. The car should be priced around Rs 30 lakhs (ex-showroom). This will make it compete against luxury sedans such as the Skoda Superb and the Mercedes CLA. Although the CLA will also soon be replaced with the new A-class sedan. The on-road pricing should be below the 40 lakh mark for the 2 series. For reference, the 3 series starts from Rs 41.7 lakhs (ex-showroom). BMW also sells the M2 Competition in our market. But this BMW 2 series comes in a completely different segment. The 2 Series Gran Coupè is expected to be launched in August this year.

Engine and Transmission

Internationally, the BMW will be offered with three engine options. But in our market, we can expect both a diesel and a petrol engine to be introduced.

It will get a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 140 bhp as and 220 nm of torque.

This will be the 218i model. The diesel will be the more powerful 220d. This will produce 190 bhp and 400 nm of torque. There is also an all-wheel-drive twin-turbocharged version called the 235i.

But this engine will not make it to India. The 218i gets a seven-speed automatic gearbox while the 220 d will get an eight-speed automatic.
