Tallboy hatchbacks are very popular amongst Indians. They are the preferred cars when it comes to families as well as fleet drivers in our market. One of the most popular cars is WagonR. But Maruti also makes the Celerio which has not gotten the success of the WagonR. Today we compare the Celerio to the Hyundai Santro to find out which is the better car. We compare the top-end variants of both cars below and give a verdict on which one is better below.

Hyundai Santro Exterior

The Hyundai Santro being a newer car gets many features that are not seen on the Maruti Celerio. The Santro gets parking sensors, parking cameras, rear AC vents, a touch-screen navigation system along with Apple Car Play and Android Auto. All these are not seen on the Celerio. The Celerio also gets some features such as tilt-steering, height-adjustable seats, CD player and alloy wheels which are not seen on the Hyundai Santro. Both cars get a boot space of 235 litres. The Celerio gets a ground clearance of 165 mm while the Santro gets 160 mm.

Engine

The Hyundai Santro gets 1.1-litre four-cylinder petrol that produces 68 bhp and 99 nm of torque. While the Celerio gets a 1.0-litre three-cylinder that produces 67 bhp and 90 nm of torque. However, the Celerio weighs 100 kgs lighter. This makes it more nimble at city speeds. Both cars get the option of an AMT gearbox as well as a CNG option.

Mileage has always been one of the strong points of Maruti cars. The company is well known to tune the engines in such a way to get the highest fuel-efficiency from them. Even in this case, it is no different as the Maruti Celerio manages to get 23.

3 km/l. Both cars also have the same mileage when it comes to their AMT variants. In their CNG variants, the Celerio again comes out on top by getting 31.8 kg/km while the Santro gets 30.

Pricing and verdict

When it comes to pricing, the top-of-the-line Hyundai Santro Asta is more expensive at Rs 6.25 lakhs (ex-showroom) compared to the top-of-the-line Maruti Suzuki Celerio ZXI (O) costing Rs 5.63 lakh (ex-showroom). According to us, the Hyundai Santro is it worth the extra money as it comes with many segment-first features as well as a newer design. The interior quality of the Santro is also far better to the Maruti Suzuki Celerio.
