Tata is a brand that has come a long way since its birth in the Indian market. Earlier, it was only known for commercial vehicles but now it has successfully cemented its position in passenger vehicles as well. The brand has also achieved many feats such as being the first manufacturer to get a five-star safety rating on its product with the Tata Nexon. Therefore today, we bring you the five Tata products that had a big impact on the Indian market as well as improving the brand name for Tata.

Tata Telcoline

This was the first pick up truck that Tata brought for the Indian market. It was launched in 1988. It was a mid-sized vehicle and therefore was practical as well. Tata had to borrow technology from Mercedes Benz in order to make this product. The car sold 64,941 units from 1988-99 and captured 25% market share soon. It also got a four-wheel-drive option. The car got a 2.0-litre turbo from Peugeot that produced 63 bhp. It got an updated turbo engine in 1994 and the engine then produced 92 bhp. This product also started shipping to other countries. Even today many of the pick-up trucks or tow trucks are the Tata Telcoline which speaks about the success of the product.

Tata Sierra

This product has come in limelight even in recent times after it was showcased in the Auto Expo. The car was showcased in a completely new form in its EV avatar. It was launched in 1993 as a three-door compact SUV. It was based on the X2 platform of Tata. The design of the car was one of the biggest strong points. It also got modern features such as power steering, music system and power windows that were not seen at the time. It was based on the same X2 platform but was tweaked to give more comfort on bumpy roads. This car was also exported in European markets. This car also got the same Peugeot engine which got the same upgrade in 1996 with the turbo engine producing 94 bhp.

Tata Sumo

The Tata Sumo was meant to be an affordable people’s carrier. The idea was to focus on affordability with comfort. The car missed out on some of the features on the Sierra but got more comfort on the inside. It became a big hit in the rural areas where the car could easily take on rough terrains even after loading the car to the brim. It got a lot of variants such as the Sumo Gold, Sumo Grande, Sumo deluxe. The car was sold until last year.

One of the most iconic SUVs in the market, the Tata Safari has been one of the most successful SUVs in the market. This was a premium affordable SUV from the company. The car again got a lot of space and luxury but it was also aimed at enthusiasts. It was launched in 1998 with a 2.0-litre turbo producing 92 bhp with a five-speed manual. In 2005, the car got a 3.0-litre engine called the Dicor engine. This produced 115 bhp and was a reworked version from a commercial vehicle. In 2007, the engine got another upgrade and it got a 2.2 litre that produced 140 bhp and was a favourite amongst enthusiasts. In 2012, the Safari Storme was introduced which got many updates on the inside as well as its design. This car got another upgrade in 2016 called the Varicor 400 nm engine. This produced 155 bhp and 400 Nm of torque along with a six-speed transmission. It became the most powerful car from Tata motors.

Tata Indica

The Indica is famously known as the first hatchback to get a diesel engine and famously started the trend of diesel engines in hatchbacks. The car also got a modern design as well as an amazing response. It got a 1.4-litre petrol motor as well as a 1.4-litre diesel engine. This car was also exported and was rebadged as a Rover in the UK. The second generation of this car was the Indica V2.
