We have recently reported about Tata’s plans of re-launching their car, the Tata Sumo in the Indian market. When the Scorpio was launched in the market it was the car that went head-on with the Tata Sumo. The Sumo will be a people’s carrier and will be competing against the Mahindra Scorpio. The Scorpio is a seven-seater SUV from Mahindra that has been doing very well in the market. The new Sumo will be a more refined car. Tata has been aggressively expanding since the past year and bringing out a lot of products in the country. It has gotten a lot of demand for its SUVs and plans to bring in new products in this segment.
The design of the new Sumo will be all new. The overall design will be derived from the Impact 2.0 design by the company. Although the Sumo will retain the overall boxy look of the car. The Mahindra Scorpio is also expected to get a new design soon. The car will get modern features such as LED DRLs as well. Therefore since both cars will be new, they will be modern looking.
The Mahindra Scorpio is powered by a 2.2-litre, mHawk four-cylinder diesel engine that produces 140bhp/320Nm. This engine could slightly be upgraded in power in the new model. The Tata Sumo is expected to get the diesel engine from the family. It will get the 2.0-litre diesel as seen on the Tata Harrier although this could be in the 148 bhp form. The Tata Sumo could also get an electric variant later on since the company is also building on its electric cars.
The Mahindra Scorpio will also get some upgraded features on its car. The car will get additions such as a new infotainment system, a premium sound system, electrically adjustable seats. The Sumo will also come with similar features. It will get the company’s latest Connected cars technology which allows you to adjust the infotainment system and controls of the car from the phone itself. Both cars are expected to come in the seven-seater form as well.

Both cars are expected to sell well in cities and even better in rural areas. Both the cars will be of solid built quality so they can take on the rough terrains Tata Sumo is expected to have many variants on it. Therefore the Tata car will mostly undercut the Scorpio in terms of pricing. It is not known when the Tata Sumo will be launched while the Mahindra Scorpio will be launched soon.
