It was a jeep-inspired off-roader was launched and instantly became popular with the masses with its proven design and rugged build. India having terrible road conditions wanted a rough an rugged car and this was the first vehicle that won peoples hearts. This car can be seen in a lot of movies with police officers and in a lot of chase sequences.
1953 – The Hurricane Engine
This version, CJ3B, was powered by the legendary Willys Hurricane engine. This showed the Indians the true power of the car along with the body.
This had a new engine and the looked like bared bones.
The car that you see had a soft-top roof whereas there were models with no roof and even the windscreen folded on the bonnet. This was the cool factor that the Thar had and a lot of people bought it for this feature. In the year 1985, the design of the car was changed and it was called the MM540. The older gen car didn’t even have doors.
1985 – MM540
Even the current car has many similarities in terms of design to this particular car. The car with its design quickly came to be known as the car to be taken off-road. The MM540 had the grille like the Armada. the engine bay was smaller and the car now got doors. The inclusion of doors was a boon and a curse, As there was on AC on this car the doors did nothing but stop the ventilation but it also meant that the car was much safer for kids now. In 1995, the Mahindra Thar was introduced as an army vehicle and there was an army specific model with altered chassis and suspension.
1996 – The Mahindra Classic
The Classic was the one which offered both options. There were those no door version too for the enthusiast and there was also a soft-top roofed car for the people looking practicality. This car introduced some new colours and features into the Thar range. Therefore, the Thar came to be known as an overall complete car now. This car was changed to the Thar in the wake of safety norms.
