2020 Maruti Baleno vs Hyundai i20 BS6 Comparison

The premium hatchback segment has been one of the most popular ones in recent times. Although the SUV segment has been on a rise in the country it is the hatchback segment that yet remains on the top. The Maruti Baleno has been the highest selling car in the country to prove this. The car is known to have a long waiting period. Although there is one car that has been challenging it for a long time. This is the i20. We compare the two to find out which one is on top.

Engine and transmission

The Hyundai i20 comes 1.2-litre VTVT petrol which gives out 82 bhp and 115 Nm of torque mated to a five-speed manual. The Baleno also comes with a 1.2-litre petrol 83 bhp and 115nm of torque. Both get an optional CVT also. The Baleno has a peppier engine of the two when you compare them.

There is also a 1.5-litre diesel engine on the i20 but the Baleno no longer has a diesel engine. Both of them have good petrol engines and in overall ride and handling it is the i20 that feels better. The braking on the Baleno isn’t the best of the lot.

Features

Since both the cars are in the premium hatchback segment, features are very important in the car. The overall fit and finish of the Hyundai i20 BS6 are superior to the Baleno. It even gets a dual-tone shade on the inside. The overall feel of the plastics is something that the Elite i20 is better at.

In terms of features, both cars are similar. They both get a touchscreen infotainment system along with Apple Car Play, Android Auto, engine start-stop, electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs, automatic climate control and rear parking camera as well.

Both cars also get some unique features that are not seen in the other car. The Elite i20 gets a cooled glove box, rear AC vents, fast USB charger on the front, centre armrest. Meanwhile, the Baleno offers auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

Even the boot space is more on the Baleno as it gets 339 litres of boot space rather than the 285 litres seen on the Elite i20. The Elite i20 gets six airbags while the Baleno gets only two. Cruise control is also offered on the new i20 along with wireless charging.

Design

The new i20 gets a sleek design and is aimed to look like a sporty vehicle. Both cars get LED DRLs. The i20 sits on 17- inch alloy wheels while the Baleno has 16-inch alloy wheels on its top variant. The ground clearance of the new i20 is expected to be similar to 170 mm of the current model. The Baleno also gets the same 170 mm of ground clearance.

Pricing and mileage

Since the Baleno is much lighter than the Hyundai i20 BS6 the mileage of the Baleno will also be higher. The Baleno gives more than 21 km/l.

The Elite i20 gives only 18.6 km/l. This is one of the major reasons why the Baleno is topping the sales charts.

The Baleno is also priced from Rs 5.7 lakh (ex-showroom) and the Elite i20 costs Rs 6.5 lakh (ex-showroom) which makes it such an attractive car. Although both the cars have been getting stiff competition from the Tata Altroz.
