The Tata Indica is one of the most significant cars in India to date. The Tata Indica paved the way for the Indian automotive scenario. It was launched way back in 1998 by Tata motors and the car defines what Tata motors are even today. It was the first car to come out of the company. The car had many things seen on it that were never seen before by an Indian made brand. The car had finally been discontinued in 2018.

We look at all the generations of the Tata Indica below.

Tata Indica first generation

The most significant car of all. The original Indica was the first hatchback car to come out of the company. This car was met by a lot of amazement as it had many significant features such as power windows and air conditioning.

This was never seen before in any Indian made car. This gave the Indians a sense that for the first time an Indian made car can compete against other cars as well. The design of this particular car was iconic and even in the cars of today, you can see some similarities as well. It came in both petrol and diesel variants which were also a first as small cars were not usually offered with diesel engines at the time.

Tata Indica V2

Since it was Tata’s first time manufacturing a car it had some manufacturing defects as well as other issues. All this was improved in the new Indica V2 launched in 2001 which became an overall excellent package. There were many other cars such as the Indigo which was the sedan version built on the  Indica’s platform. The car sold over 1.15 lakh units in its first year.

The success of this car also helped it get rebadged and was sold under the Rover brand in the UK. The Indica was also the first car to be tailor-made for India, unlike the other cars at that time. The car built a successful brand image for Tata almost immediately.

Indica Vista

This came out in 2008, 10 years after the original Indica and was launched in the Auto Expo again with the same name. The car got a completely new X1 platform and also higher levels of safety so that it could be a success in the European market. But the competition by now had caught up with the car and therefore it did not manage to get the success as the original. This car also got different models such as the Indigo Manza which was its sedan version. In 2014, Tata Motors launched the Bolt and the Zest which was built on the same X1 platform also got some success.

The Nexon that is sold now is also built on the X1 platform of the Indica Vista, while the Tiago and the Tigor are built on a heavily re-engineered platform of the original Indica. These cars are once again seeing the success that the original Indica had got and are paving the way for the company. See our review on the Tata Nexon below:
