Mahindra S101’s 1.2-litre petrol engine, with which the new micro SUV will be making its debut has been built on the same platform on which the Ssangyong Tivoli is also based. The Mahindra S101 (KUV100/XUV100) will be the smallest UV from the Indian utility manufacturer and the company will be looking at increasing the number of common parts used.

The S101’s 1.2-litre petrol engine is a three-cylinder version of the 1.6-litre Tivoli (1597cc, four-cylinder).

This 1198cc petrol engine has been jointly developed by Mahindra and Ssangyong. The third engine in this line-up is the 2.0-litre, which will be powering the XUV500 as well. This will be primarily be for the export markets. The 1.2-litre diesel engine too has been derived from the Ssangyong Tivoli’s diesel engine.

The S101 will be a five-seater and it has been designed for urban car buyers, who need a cross between SUVs  and hatchbacks. This is somewhat of the size of the i20 Active, however its pricing will tad lower than the Korean automaker’s compact cross.

Mahindra will be offering the S101 with AMT (automated manual transmission) and this has been designed by the company in-house with engineering inputs from Ricardo. The Mahindra S101 will churn out about 75bhp of power on the petrol, while the diesel will be about similar power too.

Of the three Mahindra SUVs coming in this financial year, the order of the products with ascending price tag is S101, TUV300 and the Quanto facelift. These are the three new products from the Indian utility market that will be soon making its way in the UV1 segment, where Mahindra hasn’t been very strong so far.
