The Toyota Corolla has officially been discontinued in India. The car has seen its fair share of success in the country. This year marks a total of 17 years of lifespan for the Toyota Corolla. It has truly been an iconic life for the Corolla in our country. The car was launched in 2003 and was one of the first cars from Toyota.

It was a premium sedan and competed with the likes of the Honda Civic and the Skoda Octavia.

Toyota Corolla Overview

The car came with Toyota’s build quality which meant that it would be one of the most reliable cars in the segment. It also had a decent punch but was aimed for luxury rather than sportiness and proved to be very comfortable when it was taken for long rides. The Toyota Corolla has been iconic in many ways. It got a major redesign in 2008 with the introduction of the Corolla Altis. The latest one was also introduced as a hybrid car with Toyota focus on the hybrid technology but the car did not do too well in the market.

Toyota’s plans

Toyota has slightly different plans for the country now. The second-biggest car seller in the world plans to bring only premium cars to the Indian market. It has also discontinued cars such as the Etios Liva and will now only focus on its better-selling premium cars such as the Toyota Fortuner and the Toyota Innova Crysta that have been doing pretty well for the company. The company will also bring in new products in these segments in the coming time and also continue to build on the partnership that it has established with Maruti Suzuki. The first car to come out from this venture was the Glanza which was a rebranded Baleno which has been the top-selling car in the country. Therefore all cars in the 10 lakh below segment would be rebadged Maruti’s and Toyota will be heavily relying on Maruti for this.

Sales of the Corolla

Internationally the Toyota Corolla has enjoyed a lot of success and is in fact the best selling sedan in the world. The twelfth-gen model was also planned to bring in the Indian market but Toyota has axed this idea due to there begin poor sales.

A lot of poor selling cars and variants are being discontinued now with the onset of the BS6 emission norms.

These norms require certain modifications in the engine which increase the cost of production for the manufacturer.
