Indian market is currently shifting towards SUV segments. Considering the fact many manufacturers are offering SUVs that covers a wide range of customers. Mahindra and Ford were the big manufacturers that were missing in the mid-sized SUV segment. However, Ford-Mahindra venture will be filling this gap soon.

Exterior

Recently, it was reported that Mahindra 400 will be based on the new platform that will be about 4.3 m long. The new Ford’s SUV will be also based on the same platform. Although these SUVs will be based on a similar platform, there will be lots of differences in the design. It was also suggested that Ford SUV will have similar styling as of Ford Edge.

Ford Edge is the SUV that is sold in the international markets. It’s offered with very clean but premium kind of styling. We can expect some inspired design elements in the Ford-Mahindra SUV. We can presume that it will have LED DRLs, LED taillights and also a shark fin antenna as well.

The chassis will be a monocoque chassis and will be a front-wheel-drive vehicle.

Ford-Mahindra SUV

Engine / Powertrain

At the recent Auto Expo, Mahindra showcased three new Stallion engines that included 1.2-litre, 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre petrol engines. Ford’s mid-size SUV is expected to have a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine that will be able to produce 130 bhp max power and 230 Nm of peak torque. It might be also offered with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine option that produces 163 bhp max power and 280 Nm of peak torque. A diesel engine is a little bit suspicious but we hope it at least as an option.

Transmission options will have a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic. If the SUV comes with DCT gearbox option that will make competition little tough and that’s a nice thing with customers perspective. Same engine and transmission option will be seen in the Mahindra XUV 400 as well.

Features

We can presume it to possess a segment trending features. It will include a panoramic sunroof, auto headlamps and wiper, paddle shifters, touch-screen infotainment system, climate control. Considering the recent Mahindra vehicles, we can expect Ford-Mahindra mid-sized SUV to have good level of safety. It will have multiple airbags, child ISOFIX marking, parking sensors, ABS with EBD, hill assist, etc. A similar level of features will be present in the XUV 400 as well.

Pricing and Rivals

Pricing for the SUV will be very attractive, it is expected to start at Rs 11 lakhs and the top variant can be considered around Rs 20 lakhs (ex-showroom). The launch is expected in Q2 of 2021. After the launch, it will be competing against Tata Harrier, Hyundai Creta, MG Hector and also its DNA cousin Mahindra XUV 400. Here is a video about the 7 new cars that Ford will bring to India with Mahindra.
