2020 Hyundai Verna

It is little surprising to see that Hyundai is launching Verna facelift right after most awaited Hyundai Creta, without worrying much about the former getting shadowed by the later. The facelift model for India is inspired by Russian Hyundai Solaris and thankfully not by its Chinese counterpart. Bold, chrome lade wide grill which connects the new all LED headlights sums up the changed front fascia. While the side profile remains un-altered, tail end receives new bumper with chrome insert and new LED taillights.

Some key features of the updated Verna will consist following:

    • Three BS VI compliant engine options with three different automatic transmissions paired to them, depending upon the trim you choose.
    • Safety kit like ESP, VSM, Hill Start Assist, rear disk brakes, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and 6 airbags.
    • 8-inch HD infotainment system with blue-link connectivity, all digital instrument cluster, LED light setup all around, tilt and telescopic adjustable steering wheel.
    • Sportier range topping version, coming with T-GDI engine, will exclusively get all black glossy grill, twin tip exhaust, front parking sensors and all black interiors with red inserts.
    • All connected car features.

Hyundai Verna DCT

It is now confirmed that 2020 Verna will share two engines with Creta and one engine with smaller Venue. It’s surprising to see Hyundai choosing the smaller 3-pot motor over the bigger 1.4 T-GDI option from their portfolio. Today, the 1.0 T-GDI engine powers smaller cars like Nios, Aura and Venue. Providing same engine may appear un-justified, even in higher state of tune, considering the premium positioning of the Verna. In Nios twins, it is tuned to produce 100 bhp and while in Venue it produces 18 bhp. No doubt, the engine packs punch and is fun to drive when mated to 7 speed DCT. Still, some might feel short-changed for getting it in this premium sedan especially when its bigger version is available. Pricing could be one reason why they have made this choice.

Hyundai Venue 2019 turbo

Also, when compared to Verna’s key rivals this move suddenly seems justified. Let’s see how. While Maruti and Honda chose 1.5L naturally-aspirated petrol mills for Ciaz and City, Volkswagen is moving to 1.0 TSi mill. The 1.0 liter mill chosen by Volkswagen produces 110 Bhp and is the only turbocharged engine going forward in its segment. So, the 1.0 T GDI engine from Venue, which belts out 118 bhp doesn’t look like a compromise at all.

We all know smaller displacement turbo charged mills for delivering sportier performance in higher rev range. These engines also remain fuel efficient when driven sedately. When the segment itself is highly competitive due to low volumes, falling behind on key aspect like fuel efficiency might cost a fortune. Hence to secure the best of the both world Hyundai might have chosen this over the 1.4 T-GDI offering.

Will you buy 2020 Hyundai Verna facelift over its competitors, even with this smaller engine?
