Yamaha MT-03 is a bike that is the naked version on the YZF-R3. This bike has been unveiled globally and there is high chance of this global product to make to India by 2020. The MT series has been marketed in India a lot as the dark side of Japan. The smaller bike features a look which has been picked up straight from the MT-09. The 2020 Yamaha MT-03 will be a bike which will offer a naked option to the Yamaha fans of Yamaha YZF-R3. The R3 has been there in market for a long time and is the only CKD bike that is twin cylinder and is offered in the Indian market by Yamaha.

2020 Yamaha MT-03 Launch in India

The Indian launch of the Yamaha MT03 is expected to take place by the early 2020. This bike will definitely make it to India. The Indian bike won’t be the same as the global spec model and it will lose some of its fancy bits under the result of cost cutting. MT-15 has become an overpriced bike because of the market nature and the 150cc segment which expects to offer so much more in less price. This won’t be the case with the MT 03 as there are very less naked street fighters in the 300cc segment. Secondly people are willing to spend money for a 300cc vehicle and it also offers a twin cylinder which is another advantage.

The price of the MT-03 in India will be approximately Rs 3 lakh. This price of the vehicle is well justified for a twin cylinder. This being the only naket twin-cylinder offering can also put such steep pricing. The premium offerings on the vehicle also make it reasonable. This bike is like a track machine which has been turned into a street naked. Another twin-cylinder is the Interceptor which is far ahead in displacement and is totally poles apart from this vehicle. Another aspect of the price is that the cost of this MT-03 will be slightly lesser than the Yamaha YZF-R3. It will make it a perfect to subtly standing out in the crowd. Currently the Yamaha YZF-R3 is priced at Rs 3.48 lakhs. The price of the bike will be reduced by cutting down on performance components which make no difference in the Indian market.

The engine of the MT 03 is the same as the Yamaha YZF-R3. This engine is the newly developed engine. It has a displacement of 320.6cc. The engine is kept from getting hot by using liquid cooling. The engine layout is a 4 stroke inline 2 cylinder DOHC. This combined with 4 valve system makes it a rev happy engine and it redlines at 13000 RPM. The engine is an oversquare engine is this makes it compromise a little on torque. This increases the power considerably. The maximum power comes at 10000 RPM and peak torque come at 9000 RPM.

A prominent feature of this newly designed engine is that it employs the latest combustion analysis technology to ensure a sufficient volume of air-fuel mixture intake and actively inducing a swirl and tumble flow as it enters the combustion chamber to promote rapid combustion. The engine produces a power of 42 BHP and a peak torque of 29.6 Nm. The engine of the vehicle will be slightly detuned for the MT-03. The torque will be increased so as to improve the tractability. A larger sprocket at the rear will make things easy. The larger sprocket will have some disadvantages like a slight drop in top speed.

The bike will offer Metzeler tyres. They are expected to be Radial to improve stability. The bike being naked does not offer any wind protection. The swingarm will be taken directly from the Yamaha YZF-R3. This will be a box section swing arm which will be 573mm long. The vehicle will be more stable because of this longer swingarm. The ABS system will be offered along with a switchable selection. The front will get 43 mm inverted forks. The rear will be offered with a mono-shock suspension. The angle of the suspension will be more vertical which will provide stiffness but on an increased rebound. The plentiful amount of rear-wheel travel combines with the effects of the optimized layout of the drive axis, rear axle and the pivot axis to give the rider a clear and enjoyable feeling of the shifting of machine weight during acceleration and deceleration that is one of the delights of motorcycle riding.  The console on the vehicle will be a completely digital unit. It will be inverted LED version of the one on the Yamaha YZF-R3. This also sports an analogue unit now but this might change on both the bike with the introduction of the MT-03.

Talking about the frame of the vehicle, the MT-15 uses the same frame as the Yamaha YZF-15 i.e the delta box frame. The might not be the case on the Yamaha MT-03. The vehicle might make use of a delta box or a trellis frame to cut cost and give more stability.

The international model of the Yamaha MT 03 is available in race blu and midnight black. These colours will continue along with a few specific colours for India

Design if we consider the underpinnings and the mechanical components then it will resemble the Yamaha YZF-R3. This is the case with the Yamaha MT-15. From the front of the bike will have a menacing look which will instantly make the impression of a MT-09. This bike will get tank shrouds which extend into fake bikini fairings, This will also hide the radiator. The engine of the bike is visible now and will get body-coloured cooling pipes as well as black casing. The handlebars will be wide and almost straight. The front bike will get a split seat. The pillion seat will be placed considerably higher than the rider seat. The exhaust will be side mounted like the MT-15 but an underseat exhaust would have been really an eye-catcher. The footpegs of the vehicle will be rearset and this will provide an aggressive riding posture.

The bike will have a top speed of 150kms. This sound a bit low for a 300cc vehicle but being a twin cylinder the acceleration of the vehicle will be extremely fast.

2020 Yamaha MT-03 Competition

The MT-03 has direct competition from no bike. It will compete with the KTM 390 which is a close competitor in a single cylinder and the Dominar 400. Both these vehicle are 400 cc vehicles but they offer the same performance as the MT-03. These vehicles are doing well in the Indian market and along with this, there is also an Interceptor which comes close to this price point and offered a parallel twin.
