Yamaha has introduced another 155cc premium bike in its stable. This motorcycle looks retro but is futuristic underneath. The Yamaha XSR 155 is an entry-level motorcycle and it sits along with the YZF-R15 V3.0 and the new MT-15. The engine on the bike is the same as on the other two bikes. This bike will be introduced to capture another new kind of market which is not tapped in by Yamaha in India. For now, Yamaha has introduced this bike in Thailand and this gives us hope that we can expect from the Indian version of the XSR 155 next year.

Yamaha XSR 155 Launch

The launch of this bike is expected to happen during the first half of next year. This year from November, Yamaha will start bringing in BS6 engines on the existing bikes. This bike will be launched into a premium segment of cafe racers and scramblers. The launch of this bike might be around August 2020 next year. This will be an exciting bike to consider.

Yamaha XSR 155 Price

The price of this bike will be above the YZF-R15 V3.0. The price of this bike will be around 1.55 lakhs (ex-showroom). This will be on account of the premium materials that will be used on the bike. The high pricing of the bike might not fetch sales as much higher CC classic bikes are available from Royal Enfield. This bike is marketed as a retro bike, will compete with the Royal Enfield in terms of style. The performance and practicality fetch it some bonus points but the retro looks might not convince people to buy this bike. Why Yamaha calls it retro because this bike comes from the higher cc bike like the XSR900. The probable price of the bike will be known once the launch is confirmed.

Yamaha XSR 155 Design

The design of this bike is based on the bigger XSR 900. The frame of this bike continues to be a Delta-box frame. The design elements from the XSR900 have been fitted on this bike. This bike gets a single-piece seat. It is finished in leather and materials like Alcantara. Alcantara will definitely not offered at this price point and we will have to wait till the Auto Expo to see the actual bike. This headlamp will be round and it will get a LED day time running light as well. There is going to be a split in the headlamp for the high beam and low beam. The tail light is also round and is placed where the saddle ends. There are no grab handles at the rear. All that is there is the strap on the seat where the pillow can hold on. The seat doesn’t have much of an incline and seems wide enough. The instrument cluster is circular and has a backlit display.

XSR 155 engine

Handlebars of this bike will be raised to give it a retro look. They will be wider than the one on the MT-15. This might affect the turing radius of the bike. The bike is based on the delta box frame and that can see where the engine is mounted. The tank of this bike is slim and gets a dual-tone treatment. The engine also gets a bash plate. The Thailand spec model got an upside-down fork but this is not expected in India. The tires on the bike will be the same as on the YZF-R15 V3.0 and the new MT-15. A combination of Metzelers and MRFs is to be expected in India. This bike will directly come with the BS6 version of the engine.

  • Tracker

All the 3 bikes display the characteristics that are needed and shine in their fields. This bike put a fun twist to the classic bike image and attract the youth. It will be really exciting to see these models available in India as special editions.

Yamaha XSR 155 Engine

Engine
Type
Single cylinder, SOHC, 4-valve, water-cooled VVA technology
Displacement 155 cc
Compression Ratio 11.6:1
Bore x Stroke 58.0 x 58.7 mm
Transmission
Six-speed with assist and slipper clutch

The engine of this bike is the same as on the MT-15 and the YZF-R15 V3.0. This engine is smooth and has a lot of power for a 155 cc engine. Being a smaller displacement engine it gives good economy while city driving. This engine should deliver 19.3 PS at 10,000 rpm and 14.7 Nm at 8,500 rpm. Along with this, it will be mated to a 6-speed gearbox and a slipper clutch system. This setup has been seen working smoothly on the other two bikes and will continue to be the same on this one too. The engine also gets VVA this alters the valve actuation and gives it power even in the top end. The VVA activates post 7400 rpm and the bike doesn’t run out of breath even while doing higher rpms. This the USP of the engine that’s the reason Yamaha is using this engine in this segment. Yamaha also has another 150 cc engine that comes with the FZ 3.0, but will not use it on this bike.

The dimensions of the motorcycle suggest that it is slim. The weight of the bike will be 134 kgs which are light. The power to weight ratio is also good. The seat height is unknown yet. The bike has a good ground clearance of 170mm and it can qualify as a scrambler too. The fuel tank capacity is 10 litres which means it can do some cruising too. The milage of the bike is good depending on how you drive so the 10 litre tank can suffice well. Delta box frame provides rigidity as well as is lightweight. The motorcycle remains stable at high speeds because of this frame.

Yamaha XSR 155 Top speed

Yamaha XSR 155 front

This bike will be able to achieve a top speed of 130km/h. This is extremely good for a 155cc engine because generally, other 150cc engines max out close to 100km/hr. This bike is able to reach these speeds because of better engine tuning and lighter chassis.

Yamaha XSR 155 Competition

The bike of Yamaha falls in the Retro style segment. It has the styling of a Scrambler. Currently, in the market, there are the Royal Enfield motorcycles and the Jawa motorcycles which give this kind of retro feel. On the other hand, this bike gets the engine and performance which is beyond the class of displacement it falls in. So if we take in consideration the Royal Enfield 350 can be a competition but at the same time if we consider the price at which it might be sold then the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V ABS, Bajaj Pulsar 200NS and the KTM Duke 125 will be its competitors.
