Even if you did drive to party and proceeded to drink, driving the car back home is a big no-no. In this story, the intoxicated owner of the Tesla will not only have risked getting into the car and drive. But let the Tesla’s Auto Pilot take control of the car. This incident took place in California, USA. The car was a Tesla Model S.

This happened late at night when a CHP(California Highway Patrol) officer driving south on Highway 101 in Redwood City noticed a Model S traveling at 112km/hr, which is above the posted limit. When the CHP officer pulled alongside the car, he noticed that the driver appeared to be asleep while the car was in motion. After a few miles of attempting to wake the driver up using lights and sirens, another police cruiser joined the pursuit to position itself in front of the Tesla, which caused it to slow down as part of normal Autopilot operation.

All in all, it took about 11 kilometers for the Tesla to come to a stop in the right hand lane. It took the police officers a few more minutes to wake up the driver, who was taken to a Shell petrol station where he reportedly failed a field sobriety test(American Drunk Driving Test). The offender, Alexander Samek, who is the chair of the Los Altos planning commission was arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence and was taken to the San Mateo County Jail in California.

This might sound like a first, but the California Highway Patrol has already encountered another drunk driver asleep at the wheel in a Tesla set on Autopilot. In that incident, the driver had been operating the vehicle while at twice the legal alcohol limit. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this story is that the car was able to travel at least seven miles on Autopilot without disengaging (and that the car didn’t crash into anything or anyone). Auto Pilot normally disengages after a while when the system does not see a input from driver.

All said, the Tesla Autopilot should not be used as a defense for drinking and driving charges. The system should not be relied upon regardless of whether the driver is drunk or sober. Tesla themselves caution, that drivers using the semi-autonomous feature must keep their hands on the steering wheel, stay alert, and be ready to take over within a moment’s notice.

What do you thin about this incident? Do you think that the Auto Pilot system should be used in such circumstances? Do you think in the future system will be held responsible rather than humans? Let us know in the comments below.
