Jeep Low-D SUV – Fortuner fighter is coming! Could this be Commander?

We are going to be heading next year into a tsunami of SUVs. India loves SUVs and the public’s buying trend from the past few years has shown us that how fewer people want an executive of mid-size sedan. This news is music to the years of SUV manufactures like Tata, Mahindra and especially Jeep. Jeep is going to soon get 4 new cars to India. Their current range includes the Compass, Wrangler and Grand Cherokee with their respective variants. The upcoming cars are going to include a small compact SUV especially for India, the Renegade, the Cherokee and a full size SUV based on the Compass platform. That SUV is currently being called the Jeep Low-D SUV. Now there have been hushed talks of the Commander coming back and entering India as a CKD. There is a strong possibility with the below pictures in mind that it could be this car.

This car will have three rows, a big diesel engine, 4×4 standard and will come with a detailed and extensive equipment and feature list. The car will be try to take on the Honda CRV, Skoda Kodiaq and till some extent the Ford Endeavor and Toyota Fortuner  because of the price point.

Jeep Low-D SUV Launch

Jeep will bring this car in the near future, the near future being in 2021. The car will be in it’s development stages now. The Compass Trailhawk, the new Wrangler and the Renegade will all come before it.

Jeep Low-D SUV Price

The price of this vehicle is too early to predict now. The car will be having a 3 rows, 4×4, a plush interior, a engine with more than 2-litre’s of displacement and other feature that will not be seen on the Compass or upcoming Jeep Renegade.

We can still say one thing that, Jeep will make sure it’s positioned as a premium SUV with an urban audience on its radar. The Jeep Low-D SUV will be within the Rs 28 lakh to Rs 35 lakh price range and will sit above the Jeep Compass.

Jeep Low-D SUV Design

Right now there is just one image/rendering of the car. That rendering show’s a lot of Jeep Compass in the fascia and a bit of Grand Cherokee in the side profile.

The car will have a high ground clearance and will sit on 18-inch tyres. The front will wear the traditional Jeep grille. The headlamps and the tailamps will have DRLs and LEDs. The Jeep Low-D SUV is expected to get features like rear parking sensors, sunroof and a 360-degree parking camera. Indian customers want unique features in this segment and Jeep will give them to us.

Jeep Low-D SUV Platform

While this new SUV is still some time away, we can confirm that it will sit on Jeep’s ‘Small Wide 4×4 platform’, which is widely used across FCA range. The platform also underpins the Renegade, the Compass, Fiat’s Toro pickup sold in South America and the Fiat 500X.

Jeep Low-D SUV Interior

The interior can be expected to be plush and be loaded with features and some of which could be first in it’s class. The car will have a great infotainment system and touch screen interface. The interior will be utilitarian too as it’s a big Jeep. Expect a lot of charging points, cubby holes and smart storage solutions.

The rest is too early to predict. Jeep will obviously benchmark the fellow American SUV, the Ford Endeavour.

Jeep Low-D SUV Specifications

Again it’s too early to comment. But by checking out the use of FCA engines in Jeep and Chryslar’s global line up, we can predict that the Jeep Low-D SUV will use the 3.0-litre EcoDiesel engine available on the Ram ProMaster and other heavy duty vehicle in the US market. It will have an 8-speed automatic which will be a standard unit and a 4×4 transfer box with Shift-On-Fly.

The car is expected to have a host of different driving modes too.

Jeep Low-D SUV Competition

The Jeep will be directly competing with the Ford Endeavour who will once again have a American rival to play with, the Toyota Fortuner, the Skoda Kodiaq and the Honda CRV. We are still far away from this launch. We might be able to see this car in the 2020 Indian Auto Expo.
