Tata Motors has been working hard on their Nexon concept SUV, which was showcased at the 2014 Auto Expo. The Nexon is slated to come into production by 2016. This will be Tata’s first compact, sub-4 metre SUV.

The SUV market has recently grown over 40 percent in India and forms 14 percent of the total passenger car sales in the country. The timing couldn’t be better for Tata to make a foray into the compact SUV segment and grab a sizeable share. Tata is respected more for its SUV (Safari) than their cars, hence it is now on Tata Motors to make the best of this equity.

The styling of the Nexon will be a bit different from what was showcased in the Auto Expo and  is expected to be influenced by the Land Rover Evoque. Now, that is very good thing, as the Evoque is one of the best looking SUVs in the world. It has received several accolades for its styling and design. The Nexon is believed to get a sloping roofline, 17-inch alloy wheels and bulging out wheel arches. It will also get a Harman audio system and other contemporary features like bluetooth and voice commands with its ConnectNext technology.

The Nexon is expected to get the new 1.5-litre diesel engine, sourced from Fiat, that should produce around 110-115 bhp of power and also a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine. A new six-speed gearbox is expected be fitted, alongwith an option of AMT (automatic).

Exact styling details of the Nexon are yet unknown, however, there will be a lot of part sharing from the Zest and Bolt. We will will bring you all the updates as the compact SUV gets further firmed up. The price range for the Tata Nexon is expected to be around INR 9-13 lakhs. It will compete with the Ford Ecosport, Renault Duster and the Hyundai Creta.
