After the success of the Vitara Brezza, Maruti Suzuki has now introduced a smaller cross. This is called as the Maruti Ignis and it has been launched in January. This is an all-new hatch/cross that is based on a new platform, which is light in weight. This is what makes the Ignis an exciting product. The Ignis is a super-compact SUV built majorly for city use and it is a good option to consider, especially if buyers are keen to get themselves a small car. Maruti Ignis Petrol AMT is ₹ 7.01 lakhs and Diesel AMT will be ₹ 8.08 lakhs.

It is made on an all-new platform and the car is a lot lighter than the competition. There will be new Maruti cars that will make on this platform. Those will be all small cars and Ignis is likely the biggest of the lot. In terms of design, it has been built to impress the Millenials. The design is quirky and it has all the bells and whistles that one will look for in a car. The company has given its products a major upgrade and this one does stand out in styling. It has been built to look impressive and has good performance too.

It comes with a 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine that produces 84bhp of power and 113Nm of maximum torque. This is offered with a five-speed manual and AMT options as well. The 1.3-litre DDiS engine is being offered too. This churns close to 75bhp of power and 190Nm of maximum torque. The diesel also comes with the same transmission options. These are more than enough as the car weighs between 825kgs to 960kgs.

The two engines on offer are powerful and are one of the best in class, be it performance or even mileage. It is very difficult to say which engine is better of the two. Yes, the performance on the petrol seems a tad better and it has lesser NVH levels too. At the same time, the petrol has smoother shifts with AMT. This way, the petrol becomes our pick.

Maruti Ignis Design

Some might like the design some won’t. This is how we can describe the styling of the Ignis. The fascia is dominated by a large front grille and it gets headlamps that are inside the grille. Then there are daytime running LEDs as well. The front bumper also looks stylish and there is a round fog lamp in it. The Maruti Ignis is about 3.7 metres in length and it isn’t very tall either.

The side profile doesn’t seem like an SUV but more like a hatchback. It does have stylish looking roofline that comes down sharply. Then there are also the three slant lines that are running across. The rear looks different also. The tail lamps are well proportionate and the design is appealing. This is the first Maruti to get black alloy wheels. This car does look stylish and it looks trendy. The top spec models get rear fogger and wiper too. Surprised not to see a rear spoiler on the Ignis.

Maruti Ignis Interiors

Interiors on the Ignis aren’t just stylish but are built well too. The fit and finish, quality of materials is definitely commendable. The interiors are dual tone but there are black and ivory white. A good change from the beige that does look subtle but not for a car like this. This has been made for the millenials. There is a new steering wheel, which isn’t seen on any other Maruti car. It has a new set of dials and then new-shape for the AC vents too. A 7-inch touchscreen system dominates the centre and this looks like a tab. It gets all the features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, reverse camera and maps. The other features on the Ignis include keyless entry, push start and stop.

In terms of space, the Ignis offers good amount of head room and leg room for front passengers. The seats are large and supportive too. These offer good amount of cushioning and are extremely comfortable too. The rear seats also have good amount of space on offer as well. The thigh support though could have been better. The boot space too is good enough on the Ignis.

Maruti ignis Engine

A 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.3-litre diesel engine are offered on the Maruti Ignis. Both the engines are offered with a five-speed manual transmission and even an automated manual transmission (AMT). The petrol is a peppy engine and it has good enough power for daily usage. At the same time, it even offers ease of driving be it in city or even on the highway. It doesn’t need too much of gear shifting. The NVH levels are fairly low and it doesn’t seem that the engine is on, as there is hardly any noise intruding into the cabin.

The diesel has some amount of noise and it has the regular diesel clatter. In terms of power, it has good enough too. There is a strong mid-range as the torque is churned before of the turbo at about 1800rpm. This also has good enough power for daily usage. Driving it is stress-free as this also has good amount of drivability. It isn’t as peppy as the petrol but it has good punch too.

Maruti Ignis Ride and Handling

The Maruti Ignis does a good job in the ride and handling department. First, let us begin with the basic usage. The steering wheel is light and one can zip through city traffic and tight lanes without any issues. The ride quality is just fine for daily use. When you drive on an open road, the handling does support the engine boost. This makes it easy to drive comfortably even on the highway. The car seems to be stable however it is the steering wheel that feels slack at higher speeds. We wish it did weigh up a bit. However, it is fine and one needs to get used to it.

Maruti Ignis Mileage (Expected)

Maruti Ignis Mileage

Variant Mileage
Petrol 20.89 km/l
Diesel 26.80 km/l

Both the petrol and the diesel engines shall be highly fuel-efficient. This petrol engine will return about 13km/l in the city and about 16km/l on the highway. On the other hand, the diesel will return 16 km/l and 20km/l in the city and on the highway respectively. The AMTs will see a reduction in efficiency by about 10%.
