Tata Hexa Review

The Tata Hexa has been a much awaited vehicle from Tata and had the industry talking before its launch. It was earlier shown as a concept at Geneva Motor Show in 2015. The Tata Hexa is one of the successful vehicles from Tata in recent times and has successfully wooed buyers as well, with some intelligent positioning. We review the Tata Hexa in detail and tell you whether it is worth buying. Read further.

Tata Hexa Price in India

Tata Hexa’s pricing is INR 13.1 lakhs  and goes upto INR 19.2 lakhs (on-road). This could have been a lot more aggressive and have had brilliant pricing, somehow we reckon, it is a tad expensive. Not for the equipment, more for the brand perception.

Tata Hexa Design

Tata Hexa is based on the earlier Tata Aria. This can be easily made out from the sides. However, that is the only similarity, in terms of looks. The fascia of the Tata Hexa looks muscular and sculpted. The clamshell bonnet, smoked out headlamps and an LED strip on the front bumper give a contemporary look. The taillamps are now a departure from the usual Tata styling and are horizontal. What is good about the Hexa is how rich it looks and subtle too. The styling is not ‘in the face’ neither too aggressive. One word to define the looks is ‘classy’. The Tata Hexa does not have too much chrome on it either, yet it looks very premium. All the features are shared by the company.

Tata Hexa Interiors

The interiors are as subtle as the exterior. They are classy, neat and well put together. The interiors are the best you could found on a Tata and the all black theme compliments it as well, to increase the premium quotient. A neat dashboard with a leather wrapped steering wheel, the Tata Hexa gets a touchscreen system with 10 Harman and JBL speakers. Features include cruise control, reverse parking camera, projector headlamps and leather upholstery. In terms of safety, there is ESP, ABS with EBD, six airbags, hill assist on the top-of-the-line XT variant.

Tata Hexa is offered with six and seven seating options. In terms of space, the first two rows are extremely comfortable. The second row of seating has recline option too. The third row on the Tata Hexa has recline and the space is decent enough. For tall people, head room will be tight, else it should be fine for an average Indian built. The boot is small when all the three rows are raised.

Tata Hexa Engine

The Tata Hexa has a 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine. This comes with two options – a 148bhp engine and 154bhp. The first one comes with a five-speed manual and the more powerful one has two options: six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. The NVH levels on the engine are fairly low. The torque of this engine is more than sufficient for daily driving. One doesn’t require too many gear shifts in the city or highway driving.

The six-speed manual feels a bit notchy. It does take some getting used too. The manual comes with four driving modes in the 4×4. These are Auto, Rough Road, Comfort and Dynamic. The Auto and Rough Road are 4×4, while the other two work on 4×2. On the other hand, the automatic transmission is fabulous. The shifts are smooth even downshifts. Put it in the Sport mode and you shall be amazed in the manner it performs. There is also the tiptronic mode that responds well.

Tata Hexa Ride and Handling

Tata vehicles have always had good ride, the Tata Hexa sets a new benchmark, not just for Tata, but for the segment as a whole. Despite the 19-inch wheels, we loved the way this UV rides. Tata Hexa has set a new benchmark in this segment for ride and handling. With such good road visibility, limited blind spots and such a responsive chassis. This feels like a nimble car that is being driven. It doesn’t feel huge at any point. 

The other important aspect that makes the Tata Hexa exciting is despite its high ground clearance of 208mm, it has limited body roll. The steering wheel is responsive too. The leather wrapped one is great to grip. This is surely, the new face of Tata products.

Tata Hexa Mileage

In terms of fuel efficiency, the Tata Hexa scores 10 km/l with the automatic in city and about 14 km/l on the highway. The manual version of the Tata Hexa will return an efficiency of 11 km/l in city and about 14.5 km/l on the highway. We haven’t driven the five-speed manual engine but the range will be between the six-speed manual and automatic.

Tata Hexa – Should you buy?

There is no reason, why you shouldn’t buy this. It is stylish, spacious, feature-loaded, powerful, agile and the best product in its segment. You have the Toyota Innova Crysta which is a few lakhs more expensive, hence the Hexa is in a league of its own.
