There have been rumours floating around on what all will be Fiat focusing on for the Indian car market. The truth is at the moment, the company is busy developing the 1.5-litre multijet engine and also the future product line-up for the company. This engine should be ready by 2016-17 and we will first see it to be offered on a Jeep compact SUV.

The R&D team in Ranjangaon has seen a jump in its numbers from 30 odd to about 700, and this is where the real work is happening. Away from the world, quietly Fiat has been working on a range on new products for India. The X3U platform is being developed that will be churning out a hatchback, sedan and a compact SUV. These will be replacing the Punto, Linea and the Avventura.

For the time being, Fiat plans to launch the Abarth range for the Punto and the Avventura. Other than this, it will be focusing on introducing the Jeep brand in India along with a home-grown compact SUV, which will be exported to several markets from Ranjangaon.

There are rumours that Fiat could consider the Aegea or the Grand Sienna, but apparently they might not make in the same avatar. The Aegea is likely to make it with several heavy modifications for the Indian car market. This will be helping Fiat to gain some ground and at the same time help them to increase their numbers. Fiat will re-name the Punto, Linea and Avventura replacements.
