The Hyundai Verna 2017 has managed to beat the mid-size sedan segment leader Honda City, in sales. As per SIAM reports, last month, the Hyundai Verna clocked 6,054 units while the Honda City remained at 6,010 units. Maruti Ciaz stood at third position with 5,603 units. This is after three years that Hyundai has managed to be the top seller once again in this segment. The 2017 Hyundai Verna has seen a lot of excitement and it had received more than 15000 bookings within a month of being launched. This is a new car altogether. This new generation car is much more evolved than before. The Verna was always a feature loaded car and so is this one.

The new Verna shares its platform with the Elantra. The price was kept introductory and it bound to change once the company has sells 20,000 units in India. Hyundai has priced this vehicle aggressively to attract customers during the initial phase. The lighter K2 platform has been used to develop this car. This is a reason why the car feels premium. Evolved buyers will now get something better. The new Verna has about 50% ultra high strength steel used, which adds to the light weight and at the same time does not compromise on the build quality.

The car is dimensionally different and has good space overall. New features also adorn this car now. As per Hyundai the next-generation Verna has undergone testing in different parts of the country for high speed stability, uphill drivability, cruise control and other aspects. The Hyundai Verna 2017 is a fuel efficient car too. ARAI figures suggest 17.7km/l on the petrol engine, while the diesel engine is around 24.5km/l.

The Verna comes in both petrol and diesel engines which are 1.6-litre units. The 1.4-litre engines have now been discontinued. These 1.6-litre engines are the same that were seen in the earlier model, however they have a few changes to deliver better performance and drivability. At lower speeds the car has better torque and this improves driveability. These engines come mated to a 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions. The four-speed automatic transmissions have now been discontinued, which is a good move. The new automatic versions are much improved and efficient as well. There is also a change in the engine tuning, making it better to drive in the city or even on the highway.

The k2 platform underpins the new Hyundai Verna 2017. This platform is light and does not compromise on safety. Ultra high strength steel used in almost 50% of the car. There are many useful features in the car. This platform is longer and wider. The design is based on the Fluidic 2.0 architecture. This architecture is present on Elantra, XCent 2017, Grand 2017 and even the Creta. Now the Verna follows the same and looks part of the family.

Front

A new grille looks more mature and engulfs most of the front part. It looks more evolved. The headlamps are sleek and the grille gets chrome slate, though only on higher variants. Projector headlamps are now seen in the car and it and also gets LED DRLs. This is what makes the Hyundai Verna 2017 a lot more stylish and attractive. The fog lamps get chrome surrounds and the bumpers are stylish.

Side

The Hyundai Verna 2017 is sporty looking especially from the side. The design is inspired from a coupe and hence it looks suave as well. The silhouette has clean lines flowing across. The mid models have 15-inch steel/alloy wheels and the higher ones have 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. The top variant also gets chrome door handles.

Hyundai Verna 2017 rear

New Hyundai Verna 2017 Interiors

The cabin feels premium and rich. Dual tone theme with beige and black makes the car feel quite airy. The top-of-the-lineSX (O) variant has  leather wrapped steering wheel which is of good quality. Dashboard of the car is pretty neat. There are similarities to the Elantra here also. A large touchscreen is in the centre and has oblong AC vents on both sides. The AC controls sit below. The quality on the materials is quite impressive and has good touch and feel quotient. The steering wheel is leather wrapped and it has controls too. The instrument cluster has two dials and a driver information system. This time it offers distance to empty for the first time, which is welcome.

2017 Hyundai Verna dimensions

The higher variants come with a 7-inch touchscreen system which looks good and the lower models have a 5-inch touchscreen. The 7-inch touchscreen come equipped with MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, reverse camera and a navigation system. The car also gets front and rear USB charging. The top model has 6 airbags on offer. The boot also has hands-free opening option. There are rear AC vents and 12V charging charging socket also. There is a rear manual blind on offer too.

Hyundai Verna 2017 new rear seat

There is more than enough space for front passengers in the Verna 2017. The side and back support is also good enough. Tall passengers will not have any problems. Moving into the rear seat, the cabin offers decent space. It isn’t very tight, but just sufficient for tall people. At the same time, there is sufficient knee room and just enough head room. However, three people will find it a bit of squeeze. The width is slightly lesser than what we would have liked. The boot on the Verna 2017 though is huge and can take n a lot of luggage.

New Hyundai Verna 2017 rear

The 1.4-litre petrol engine is gone. Hyundai won’t be offering it any more for the Indian car market on the Verna. In petrol there is only the 1.6-litre, which produces the same amount of power. The 1.6-litre diesel engine is also on offer. Whats more, it will be churning out similar torque with changes in tweaking. Both the engines have been tuned for better performance, be it in city or even on the highway. This is what makes it stand out in the crowd.

Hyundai Verna 2017 engine

In terms of performance, the petrol and diesel engines have very good power. We haven’t driven the petrol yet, the diesel is for sure and a good choice when it comes to driveability. The clutch is quite light and gear shifts are quick. There is more than sufficient torque in this engine and the Verna is stress-free to drive as well. The automatic is for sure more comfortable option, especially for city driving.

The torque of the 1.6-litre petrol sets in at a lower rpm. The 1.6-litre diesel has a much higher torque at 25kg-m at 1250rpm. The petrol has 6-speed manual and automatics have 6-speed AT. 126bhp is the power that the Diesel has and 121bhp of power is what the petrol engine gets. Hyundai is looking at making the Verna a premium offering and this it wants to achieve by making only 1.6-litre petrol engine available and taking out the 1.4-litre petrol and diesel.  The steering geometry is also improved as per the company and it now offers better feedback. The gearbox location is also changed for optimisation, the company states. The engines have good enough power and improved torque for better drivability. One doesn’t have to shift gears that often

New Hyundai Verna 2017 Mileage

Engine City Highway Claimed
Petrol Manual 11 km/l 15 km/l 17.4 km/l
Petrol Auto 10 km/l 14.5 km/l 17.1 km/l
Diesel Manual 16 km/l 19 km/l 24.8 km/l
Diesel Auto 15.5 km/l 19.5 km/l 23.9 km/l

There isn’t a major increase in the mileage of this new car. The company hasn’t revealed the figures, but most certainly it will be similar. For the first time we see Hyundai offering distance to empty and mileage indicator on the driver information system.

New Hyundai Verna 2017 Competition

Hyundai’s is targeting the Honda City and the Maruti Ciaz. Hyundai is looking at grabbing market share form these two sedans. The other vehicles that will be competing are Volkswagen Vento, Skoda Rapid and Fiat Linea. These are the other cars that compete in the same segment. The only advantage that the Vento and Rapid have is of a new-age automatic transmission on the diesel, which is now also coming on the Verna. Though it isn’t the seven-speed dual clutch, but the single-clutch six-speed will do the job. Whats more, only the Skoda and Volkswagen have diesel automatic sedans, giving Hyundai Verna 2017 an upper hand for such kind of buyers. Hyundai is a better known and preferred brand over the other two. This will help Hyundai to add a new set of buyers also to its kitty.

  • HI VERY NICE CAR ,I BOUGHT TOP END FANTASTIC

  • Hello Sandy, ground clearance won’t be an issue in the Verna. We have driven it and never faced any issues what so ever.

  • Hello, I checked the YouTube review, and went through the entire post, my worry is about the Ground Clearance, does it have enough Ground Clearance for suburbs and unscientific road humps in the city limits?

  • Good improvements but Very Disappointing that Automatic is not available with all the top end specs. Milege too seems to be low still.
These are the reasons I could not opt a Creta even !
