Hyundai Verna 2017 to have 6-speed automatic
The compact SUV has affected a lot of segments and one of them is the mid-size sedans. The Honda City, Hyundai Verna and the Maruti Ciaz segment has been hit the most. This segment has seen a drop in numbers and it can even blamed to the fact that not many new products are launched at this price point. But it seems Hyundai will not want to miss out on any of the new segments and the new Hyundai Verna 2017 might be the next product that could revolutionise the segment. The Grand i10, then the Elite i20 and the Creta, weren’t just highly successful but even grew the segment.
The new Verna is based on the K2 platform, which is lighter. This has about 50% ultra high strength steel used, which is lighter and doesn’t effect the built quality and safety aspect. There is a change in the dimensions and there is an increase in space. There are more features too on offer. Hyundai states that the next-generation Verna has been tested in different parts of the country for high speed stability, uphill drivability, cruise control and other aspects.
In terms of engines, there shall be a 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines. These engines have undergone a major upgrade. There is higher power and torque output even at low engine speeds. These engines are made available with a 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions. The four-speed automatic have been discontinued. This is what makes it an exciting option to consider for those looking at an automatic.

Based on a new K2 platform, Hyundai Verna 2017 has seen an update in the dimensions, capabilities and other aspects. This is an all new platform for the next-gen Verna and the new sedan is longer, wider and more promising. Hyundai is looking at adding more options on this new sedan and it will certainly make it competitive. This new platform enhances the car’s ability to have better tensile strength to improve the safety.
The new-generation Verna 2017 has an all new fascia. There is a large front grille and is hexagonal in shape. The horizontal chrome slats is carried forward on the new sedan. The headlamps are sleek and has pulled back. The higher variants get projector headlamps and daytime running LEDs. The fog lamps are are round and have chrome surrounds. The side profile is almost coupe-like. The door pillars are blacked out and the 16-inch alloy wheels look stylish. The rear too have sleek tail lamps. These are LEDs and look like a mini Elantra from the rear.
The new Hyundai Verna 2017 has the Fluidic Design 2.0. The design has matured and it does look bigger due to change in the length, it is wider and it sits lower too. This changes the stance of this sedan. The lines are simple and subtle.

On the inside, the new Verna 2017 offers stylish interiors, but again they match the Elantra. The quality has seen an improvement and the cabin feels more like a premium European car than an Asian car. There is a large touchscreen system at the centre with MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There are a lot more features on offer too. The centre console layout is neat and the display has a lot of features on offer. There is ventilated seats, sun roof, cruise control, leather seats, rear AC vents with 12V charging slots. Then there is driver information system with mileage and distance to empty also. Apart from this, there are six airbags on offer too, on the higher variants. There is hands free opening option of the boot.
At the same time, there will be more space for the rear passengers. This will make the rear seats more comfortable. Then there is also the rear AC vents and USB charging also. It was never offered on the Verna and this time it shall be. This is a good bit for those who are chauffeur driven. The rear seat space is good enough and is comfortable even when two six-footers sit behind each other. The space in terms of knee room is more than excess when compared to the competition. Three people cannot sit very comfortably at the back. Hyundai Verna 2017 boot size is massive and is more than comfortably will gobble luggage for an entire weekend for a family.

The initial pricing of the new Hyundai Verna 2017 will be aggressive and that will be introductory. Hyundai will want to storm this segment and see a growth for itself. It will want to do what it did in the Grand i10, Elite i20 and the Creta segments. The idea is to grow this segment and dominate it. Also the new Hyundai Verna 2017 will be offering a lot more features and we reckon there won’t be a difference in the pricing of this new sedan. The automatic won’t be offering the top variant features, and it will be made available in the mid-variant itself.
The new-generation Hyundai Verna 2017 will be launched on 22nd August. The bookings have started and the company is already expecting them. The deliveries will start by the end of this month. By 22nd August, the car will be there on display as well. Hyundai is targeting to deliver at least 10,000 units of the new Verna before Diwali to its car buyers and the company is enhancing the number of cars available to buyers by adjusting its production capacity.
|Variant||Maximum Power||Maximum Torque||Transmission|
|1.6-litre Petrol||121bhp||155Nm||6-speed manual/6-speed auto|
|1.4-litre Diesel||89bhp||220Nm||6-speed manual|
|1.6-litre Diesel||126bhp||260Nm||6-speed manual/6-speed auto|
The 1.4-litre petrol engine is gone. Hyundai won’t be offering it any more for the Indian car market on the Verna. In petrol there is only the 1.6-litre, which produces the same amount of power. The 1.6-litre diesel engine is also on offer. Whats more, it will be churning out similar torque with changes in tweaking. Both the engines have been tuned for better performance, be it in city or even on the highway. This is what makes it stand out in the crowd.
In terms of performance, the petrol and diesel engines have good enough power. We haven’t driven the petrol yet, the diesel is for sure and a good choice when it comes to drivability. The clutch is light and gear shifts are quick. There is more than sufficient torque in this engine and the Verna is stress-free to drive as well. The automatic is for sure more comfortable option, especially for city driving.
The 1.6-litre petrol has seen an improvement in its torque. The 1.6-litre diesel has a much higher torque at 25kg-m at 1250rpm. The petrol has 6-speed manual and automatics have 6-speed AT. 128PS – Diesel, 123PS Petrol. Hyundai is looking at making the Verna a premium offering and this it wants to achieve by making only 1.6-litre petrol engine available and taking out the 1.4-litre petrol. The company also claims that the steering effort and feedback has been enhanced. The gearbox location is also changed for optimisation, the company states.
|Engine||Mileage in City||Mileage on Highway|
|1.6 Petrol||10 km/l||14 km/l|
|1.6 Petrol Auto||9.5 km/l||13.5 km/l|
|1.4 Diesel||15 km/l||19 km/l|
|1.6 Diesel||13 km/l||18 km/l|
|1.6 Diesel Auto||12.5 km/l||18 km/l|
There isn’t a major increase in the mileage of this new car. The company hasn’t revealed the figures, but most certainly it will be similar. This is the first time, the car is offering mileage and distance to empty on the driver information system.

Hyundai’s main target is the Honda City and the Maruti Ciaz. These will be the two sedans Hyundai will be looking to disrupt. The other vehicles that will be competing are Volkswagen Vento, Skoda Rapid and Fiat Linea. These are the other cars that compete in the same segment. The only advantage that the Vento and Rapid have is of a new-age automatic transmission on the diesel, which is now also coming on the Verna. Though it isn’t the seven-speed dual clutch, but the single-clutch six-speed will do the job. Whats more, only the Skoda and Volkswagen have diesel automatic sedans, giving Hyundai Verna 2017 an upper hand for such kind of buyers. Hyundai is a better known and preferred brand over the other two. This will help Hyundai to add a new set of buyers also to its kitty.
There are multiple changes in the dimensions. The new Verna is longer by 30mm, and 30mm increase in wheelbase too. The new Verna is wider by 29mm. There is an increase in the cabin space too. There isn’t a major difference in the ground clearance. The 2017 Hyundai Verna looks bigger and a lot more proportioned than the current one. It has a more grown up look to it. The longer wheelbase makes it look grown up.
