Kawasaki Versys 1000 006

The Motorcycling scene in India is just starting to hot up. Pretty much all the premier names in the big bike category are either present here, or have plans to enter the market very soon. From Nakeds to Off-Roaders, Sports-Bikes and Sports Tourers, they’re all there. But it is the quarter-liter class that holds the most potential for growth. Let’s face it, India is still at an early development stage when it comes to motorcycling infrastructure and riding skills. In such a situation, a powerful, high cc machine seems rather limited in its application. While they’re nice to have, the large bikes come with their own set of demanding needs. And that’s something that not everyone is in a position to cope with. Besides, the purchasing power too is still limited and most of the higher capacity bikes continue to remain beyond the reach of the average motorcycling enthusiast.

The key then is to take an engine that’s practical enough (and affordable) to a wide range of consumers and use it across a host of body styles to drive sales volumes. This is why we were so thrilled to hear of the news that Kawasaki may be contemplating the launch of a  Versys 250 model. Riding it’s liter class sibling, we were blown away by the road dynamics and the sheer ease of usability that this machine had. We immediately fell in love with it. Later, we realized that a regular motorcycling enthusiast would only be able to harness a tiny portion of the potential that this bike portrayed. We had been dreaming of a downsized version, one that’s ideal for touring, has enough poke in its engine and yet, remains affordable enough. Kawasaki seem to have heard our prayers and the news of a Versys 250 is sheer music to our ears.

Going by the renderings floating on the inter-web, the Versys 250 is the adventure version of the naked Z250. Thus, it is likely to carry over the diamond-frame design from its naked cousin, while mirroring the twin lamps up-front and have the exhaust tucked under the belly. On the features front, expect to see a suitably downsized version of that excellent windscreen seen on the Versys 1000 and the Versys 650, tourer-spec suspension components and a seat that promises to take care of your bottom on a long day in the saddle.

We’ll be waiting with bated breath to see if she materializes later this year in Indonesia with a global launch sometime early next year.
