Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) is contemplating a 2015 launch for its first hybrid car in the country. According to a report on Hindustan Times, the company might add the hybrid variant to Swift’s line-up this year in India. Just so you know, Government of India announced FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric vehicles in India) initiative to support the sales of electric vehicles and since then, several biggies in form of Mahindra, Tata and Maruti are eyeing to launch electric vehicles.

Talking about the Maruti Swift Range Extender, it is powered by a 658cc, three-cylinder petrol engine. There is also an electric motor, which is powered by a 5kwh lithiumion battery pack, with the engine. The Swift Range Extender delivers a smashing mileage of 48.2 km/l, while having an all-electric driving range of 25.5 kilometers. The engine develops a maximum power of 73bhp.

The HT report further confirms that Maruti would launch the Swift Range Extender or a similar model based on the Swift Dzire this year. However, it won’t be as easy for the country’s largest automaker as it had to import the engine of this hybrid vehicle from its Japan facility. It would result in higher pricing, something which people haven’t favoured with Maruti products.

Under the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric vehicles in India) initiative, the Government would provide incentives of INR 13,000 to INR 124,000 for sub-4-metre four-wheelers. Recently, Mahindra also rolled out the first five units of its Verito Electric, which is supposed to go on sale by year end.

As for Maruti Swift Range Extender, it made its Indian debut at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo. However, it was again showcased at the International Green Mobility Expo in February 2015. It would be quite interesting to see how Maruti prices its first hybrid offering in India.
