Mahindra to re-introduce Luna – EXCLUSIVE

Last time around we had broken the story that Mahindra Two Wheelers had registered the Luna brand and now we have a lot more information to share. Mahindra will be introducing a Peugeot moped for the Indian masses and it will be rebadged as Luna. One of our sources has confirmed that Mahindra will be introducing a 50cc moped in India and this will be competing with the TVS range.

At the moment, there is only TVS that has a presence in the moped segment.

Mahindra Two Wheelers is at the moment testing two 50cc mopeds and they will be named as Luna and Luna TFR. The original Luna also had 50cc engine. This moped will have a length of about 1600mm, a fuel tank capacity of about 5 litres and will weigh 41 kilograms. With limited competition in a segment that is growing, Mahindra will want to get a share of its pie and enhance its current sales volumes. At the moment, it is the Centuro and the Gusto.

Mahindra will be looking at introducing these two new mopeds in 2016, and they will be displayed at the upcoming 2016 Auto Expo. Mahindra is keen to enhancing its current sales volumes in the two-wheeler segment and that is one reason why it has been focusing on affordable commuter bikes, automatic scooters and now even the moped.

Luna has been one of the best known moped brands our country has witnessed and Mahindra with the ownership of Kinetic and Peugeot is looking at getting them back, with better technology and modern styling. The moped market in India at the moment is about 60,000-66,000 monthly units, which is solely driven by TVS.

Mahindra will be looking at expanding its sales and also targeting to displace TVS from its leader position.
