At the moment, the Indian car market only has Magneti Mirelli AMTs that are available on a couple of Maruti Suzuki products and even Tata Motors will soon have two in its line-up. In an interview of ET with Schaeffler, the brand is looking at introducing its AMT (automated manual transmission) technology and also e-clutches for the Indian car market.

In the interview, Dharmesh Arora, CEO and President of Schaeffler India stated, “We have provided various possible solutions to our customers in this space. We have an ECM (electronic clutch module or management) wherein the clutch pedal is removed, and then the gears can be changed without application of the clutch — that is also a clutch-pedal-less like AMT. We also have an AMT solution. AMT is getting well accepted and almost every OEM is working on it. We will be very happy and glad to work and further that solution.

At the moment, they haven’t commenced production in India, but they are in talks with several clients for the same. The production will begin only after the German parts supplier gets orders for either the ECM or AMT. Mr Arora further stated, “ECM is already demonstrated…We have demonstrated AMT to our customers. Our competitor has a lead on it, but in terms of how the market is growing and developing, we will certainly be happy to participate.
