The two-wheeler market has been doing extremely well since the last year and a half.

The growing demand is clearly setting up high goals for the two-wheeler manufacturers, especially the bikes with a displacement of 500cc and above. This segment is expected to double up to 20,000 units by 2020. At the moment, Harley Davidson and Royal Enfield are sitting at the top of the hierarchy. Amongst all, these two brands have seen around 40-50% of growth year-on-year. The other players in this segment include Triumph, Yamaha, Suzuki and DSK Motor wheels (which markets both Hyosung and Benelli branded bikes).

Many top level brands like Yamaha Motors, Triumph are also expecting an exponential growth in the 500cc plus segment superbikes and the growth to continue right till 2020. From these comments we can predict the change in pattern of biking in India. It reflects that these bikes are sold not merely for riding purpose but also is a choice of lifestyle, which people choose here in India, especially when we talk about the Harley and Royal Enfield. Before the scenario was, selling 500cc plus superbikes with pricy tag but lesser volumes. Now it is the other way round. Companies are trying to be more competitive while pricing their products in order to gain volumes. Bulk volume is going to be the key to success for selling superbikes in India at least.

But there are some companies, which still produce bikes with high price tag and sell in limited units, just like the new Yamaha YZF-R1M, which cost a handful INR 32 lakhs in Mumbai.

The superbike market in India in the next three to five years will be growing as fast as the luxury car brands.

With change in lifestyle patterns the trend for bikes will not die anytime soon.
