Volvo is gearing up with a new sedan, the S90 to compete with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6 and the BMW 5 Series.

The Swedish auto manufacturer had launched the new-generation XC90, which is due to make its way into India by this September.

The Volvo S90 will be replacing the currently sold S80 saloon making it an all new product from Volvo.

Volvo’s recently introduced new-generation XC90 replaces its current best-seller generation, raising the bar to another level.

Now all the German luxury SUVs have to do the catching Volvo has upped the ante to another level. Can Volvo do it with the S90? There is no doubt in that. The company has been focusing on its strong points and it isn’t copying others. In an interview with Autocar UK, Volvo UK managing director Nick Connor mentioned, “There is no point in trying to outhandle the 3 Series or whatever, we have our own values around exterior and interior design, safety, comfort and powertrain advancements that stand out for their own qualities.”

When asked about the upcoming Volvo S90, he mentioned “I actually think people will be even more surprised when they see it than they were when they saw the new XC90. It really is quite impactful; a car that your eye just keeps getting drawn to. The design and dimensions make it a far more premium looking car than the S80, the interior is an evolution of the XC90’s, but a step up again, and it has a real distinction about it.”

So, all can do now is wait for Volvo to surprise us with one fascinating product from its stable that might not be as dynamic as the 5 Series, but certainly retain the Swedish brand’s DNA. Volvo used to sell the S90 sedan back in the old days, the Swedish manufacturer might just be looking at reviving the old brand.
