The rumors were too good to be true it seems. The thought of a micro off-roader and another small three door hot-hatchback are now only a distant memory. The Jinmy and the Swift Sports are not going to come to India. This news comes after the launch of the Maruti Ciaz. According to one leading publication (Zigwheels), CV Raman of Maruti Suzuki has said that both cars don’t make sense for the manufacturer.
This could be due to the fact that there has not been a big demand for three door SUVs in India. Maruti has seen that cars like the Force Gurkha and the Mahindra Thar do not sell in huge numbers and do not have the same scope of success as it’s running models. Maruti has always been about models that churn out volumes and it’s surprising Maruti has cars like the Baleno RS and the SCross with the 1.6-litre engine. These cars are not volume churning products but only value adding products for the manufacturer. Thus, the Jimny is not going to be a reality anytime soon.
When we talk about the Swift Sports, again India’s affair with three door cars has been limited to enthusiasts. The last popular mass produced three door car was Maruti’s own Zen Carbon. The appeal of the car was only limited to the enthusiasts and not the masses that want something practical with four proper doors. The Swift Sports is held back because of that notion held by people in our country. There are a handful of hot-hatchbacks like the Fiat Punto Abrath, the Maruti Baleno RS, Ford Figo S and the Volkswagen Polo GT. Tata is soon going to get the Tiago JTP and that will be nice too, but all of these will be four door practical hatchbacks at the same time. Nobody wants to dabble in this low sales, niche market by getting two all new products and investing in assembly and marketing them to that audience.
So the bottom-line is simple. Maruti will not bring these two products to India any time soon. They are not to be made for export too. Our market needs to develop more. We might see products like the Ignis Sports and Baleno Sports which were shown as concepts at the 2018 Indonasian Auto Show come to India sooner than the Jimny and the Swift Sports.
