The police have a tough job of protecting us and their constituencies from harm. They need the cars that can do the job correctly and quickly. Toyota Innova

States – Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, NCR, Tamil Nadu

The Innova is a very versatile police vehicle. It’s used in multiple cities, towns and is the choice for cops in many situations.

It has a lot of space inside for equipment. The car being a Toyota offers niggle-free service.

It’s a step up from the Quails but is a clear direction change that the Indian police have taken, by using better, faster and a vehicle more oriented for the job. The Innova is a great choice.

Maruti Gypsy

States -Maharashtra, Delhi

This little off-roader is still the chase vehicle of choice for a lot of states. Robust mechanicals mean the Gypsy has a good reliability record with servicing not an issue. The police is unlikely to go off-roading but even if the situation demands and they have to, the Gypsy will be in its comfort zone.

Chevrolet Tavera

States -Delhi, NCR, Madhya Pradesh

While the Tavera was touted to be a slightly more premium offering in comparison to other UVs like the Bolero, the lower end versions found their use as police vehicles. A lot of space inside, and improved on-road dynamics made the Tavera a good choice, before the police got MPVs as their urban patrol vehicles. Many of them have now been phased out due to Chevy’s departure from the Indian market.

Maruti Ertiga

States -Chandigarh, Mumbai, Karnataka

The Ertiga is the most popular MPV in the Indian market. It has a good amount of space inside and is more car-like. Police can use this car in inner-city chases and patrolling, too. It can also seat seven, and the diesel engine can surprise you with its performance.

REVA

Electric cars never caught on in India. And while still a niche market, it made all the right sense for one of the best planned cities in the country to adopt it for their police department. It was used by Chandigarh cops.

Tata Indigo

States -West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh

Both Indigo have been used as police vehicles for a long time. It is a comfortable car and is a good inner city patrolling car. It is good for helping those in need of comfort.

Mahindra Bolero

One of the most successful SUVs in India, is the Bolero is a popular choice for the police. It can handle bad roads easily, has the ability to handle and load goons at the back. It is drivable on the road. Like the Sumo, the Bolero’s old-school styling works very well for the police.

The Sumo Gold is still in service. It gets a more powerful engine (3-liter unit making about 85 PS and 250 Nm). It has a better interior, but the same ability to travel fully laden. One of the best on the list today is the Mahindra Marksman, used by Mumbai Police. This bullet-proof vehicle can carry a total of six occupants, has 360-degree visibility, and boasts multiple firing points and even a machine gun mount. This is the equivalent of a tank on the streets for the Mumbai police.

The Polaris RZR as a police interceptor takes it all to a different level altogether. The Polaris RZR S 800 is an off-road machine that can gobble bad/no roads at blisteringly quick pace. With an 760 cc engine, the ATV can do 0-100 in just 4.5 seconds. It can seat two, which is okay, considering the vehicle is for surveillance, and can be a nightmare for lawbreakers

Ford EcoSport

States -Tamil Nadu, Telangana

The compact SUV is a great highway patrolling vehicle. Powerful and decent to drive, the EcoSport can take on bad roads, long highways with sweeping bends, and even city roads. It’s the only compact SUV that’s used by police at present with the exception of the TUV300 that is coming into service for the Mumbai police.
