There are many cars that deeply desirable the 90s and were fantastic in their segment. These cars were the best when it came to performance, luxury, affordability and other aspects. This is what made them heroes.

Most of us will remember this car in it’s last years of service in the early 2000s as a taxi. But when the car car came out in 1997 it was a big deal. The hatchback had a 1.7-litre diesel engine. This little Fiat was a hoot to drive. It was the car that made many a fan of the Fiat brand. This car made people go back to Fiat and become customers of the awesome Palio.

Tata Sierra Turbo

The Sierra has become a icon among off-road fans. This Tata has developed a cult following of its own. It was available in a non-turbo and turbo engine format.

The turbo engine was thew one to go for and had 90bhp. The car with it’s 3 door format was available with 4×4. The car was more of a lifestyle statement. The Indian buyers were not ready for it. Today if Tata brings this car back, it will do well.

Mitsubishi Lancer

The one car we can’t find unmolested and not tampered with now days. Everyone at some point tried to do some kind of modifications to it.The Mitsubishi Lancer was available in India in three engine variants – 1.5 Petrol, 1.8 Petrol and 2.0 Diesel. Also, with 120 bhp on tap, it was a huge bump over the 85.8 bhp that the 1.5-litre motor offered. The Lancer even handled brilliantly and was a joy to throw around in the corners.

This was great rally car, one that was very successful.

Honda City 1st generation

The first-gen Honda City marked the Japanese carmaker’s entry into the Indian car market. It was introduced with 1.3- and 1.5-litre petrol engine options and soon became a cult car, especially after the introduction of VTEC technology in 2000. The first generation City is still desirable and tuner’s favorite.

Maruti Zen

This car was hugely successful. After the 800, the Zen was an aspirational car of the 90s The car is now looked by many as the small go cart to have. The later the appeal of the Zen increased with the Carbon and Steel editions.

The 3-door vehicles are not known for practicality. So when Maruti Suzuki introduced a limited edition, 3-door model of Zen only enthusiasts bought it. The Zen Carbon and Steel were not too powerful with peak power at 60bhp. They were iconic though.
