Maruti had launched the S-Cross crossover last year and again this year they have introduced the Vitara Brezza compact SUV. While both cars are positioned differently, they come quite close to each other in terms of pricing and utility. The Vitara Brezza makes a presence for itself. This compact SUV gets a thick chrome slat grille that runs across. The headlamps have bull horn shaped LEDs and then there are round fog lamps as well. The side profile of the Vitara Brezza is SUV-ish with a floating roof design and squarish wheel arches. The rear of the Vitara Brezza looks appealing with tail lamps being mounted on the tail gate and even the body. The large thick chrome strip runs across the rear with Vitara Brezza embossed on it.

The large headlamps in the front are dominating and and the top-end variant gets projectors too.The centre in flanked by dual-horizontal slatted grille with the Suzuki badge. The side has got a sharp shoulder line and it is only the wrap-around  taillamps look premium at the rear. It has body cladding and also a raised stance. But the S-Cross comes across more as a large hatchback than a proper crossover. The Vitara Brezza looks better from the front while the S-Cross has a better looking rear portion.

Maruti’s Vitara Brezza has an all new interior design. The black interiors looks sporty, however the plastic quality could have been a bit better. The fit and finish of the materials is good. It gets a three-spoke Maruti Suzuki steering wheel with controls for audio and telephone connectivity. The centre console consists of a touchscreen system with maps, reverse parking camera and then climate control. The extra features on the Vitara Brezza include cooled glove box, reverse parking camera, maps, rear armrest and electrically folding mirrors.

Behind the wheel the S-Cross it feels familiar to other Maruti cars. From the steering to the power window switchgear and wing mirrors, been seen on existing Maruti models. The large seats are quite comfortable and even more so in leather trim.The cabin on the whole is nice and airy. There’s enough space for four reasonably sized adults and are a marked improvement from the rest of the Maruti line-up. The interiors are all black, imparting a sporty and premium feel. It gets a touchscreen audio system with bluetooth and also push button start.The interiors of the S-Cross feel more premium compared to the Vitara Brezza.

Maruti Suzuki is offering the Vitara Brezza with a 1.3-litre diesel engine that churns 90bhp of power and 200Nm of maximum torque. This comes mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The Vitara Brezza has sufficient torque and one of the strongest aspects of this compact SUV is its drivability. The ease of driving in city or even the highway without having to change gears that often. The Vitara Brezza comes only with a diesel engine and there is no AMT on offer.

The S-Cross comes with two diesel engine options. One is the same 1.3-litre unit as in the Vitara Brezza with 90 bhp of power. The other is a 1.6-litre unit, sourced directly from Fiat.  This engine churns out 118bhp of power and is a torque monster. The refined ride quality and interior space, make it an ideal companion on those long highway drives.

Both cars are at par in performance when it comes to the 1.3-litre engine, the Vitara Brezza being slightly quicker due to its lighter weight. The S-cross 1.6 is a scorcher of a performer but comes at a premium price too.

The Maruti Vitara Brezza is priced between INR 8.4 lakhs to INR 11.39 lakhs.

The Maruti S-cross is priced between INR 9.7 lakhs and INR 12.7 lakhs for the 1.3 and INR 12.48 lakhs to INR 14.6 lakhs for the 1.6 version.

The Maruti Vitara Brezza returns a mileage of 21.59 km/l . The Maruti S-Cross returns a mileage of 21.11 km/l for the 1.3-litre engine and 20 km/l for the 1.6-litre engine

Verdict

The Maruti S-Cross has been around from September 2015 while the Vitara Brezza is the latest entrant in the market. Both these cars have a unique appeal. The Vitara Brezza has the proportions and design of an SUV, while the S-Cross is more of a large hatback with a raised stance. However it is the S-Cross which seems more premium in totality. In terms of build and comfort too the S-Cross is the better vehicle here. The Vitara Brezza is a better city vehicle and the S-Cross has better high speed manners. If your usage is more in the city, then the Vitara breeze is preferable and if you are more of a inter-city traveller and have got more of highway running then the S-Cross is the clear choice. In terms of price, there is a variant to variant difference of around INR 1 lakh for the 1.3 version, the S-Cross being the more expensive of the two, but certainly more premium too.
