Fly Emirates only in First Class, stay in Dubai only at the Burj Khalifa. There is nothing as worthwhile in London as the Central London. There can’t be anything more British luxury than The Savoy. Savoy stands proud next to River Thames next to Strand. Built in 1889, Savoy just celebrated its 125th anniversary on 19th June. The hotel had closed in 2007 for renovation and re-opened in 2010.

Savoy has a long history behind it and the land is under the Savoy-family ownership since 1032. House, palace, hospital and finally luxury hotel. These were the different phases of Savoy. The Savoy is located on the Strand and the entrance design is narrow. This was designed in the 19th century and there is no room for expansion. The Savoy is just steps away from the colour and vibrancy of Covent Garden and a short taxi or boat ride to renowned London landmarks or to the ultimate designer shopping destinations of Knightsbridge, Mayfair and Chelsea. The Savoy Court is the only renowned street in UK where vehicles are allowed to be driven on the right hand side.

Enter the hotel and the styling is very British. The interiors are a perfect blend of contemporary and traditional worlds.

Each floor has a rotary dial telephones in the passage, as a vintage. The elevator styling too is retro. What could be better than a One Bedroom Suite at Savoy. One-bedroom Timeless Suites that are decorated in elegant Edwardian or Art Deco style with a sitting room, bedroom and bathroom separated by an entrance foyer.

As the name suggests it’s a bedroom and a living room and it offers offer either a king-size or queen-size bed and quietly overlook the courtyard or the river.  Retaining much of their original character, no two suites are the same and feature a writing desk, sofa, armchair, personal bar, Loewe flat-screen television, DVD player, Meridian iPod docking station and bespoke Savoy furnishings. We stayed there during our haul of the new Range Rover launch in Royal Ballet School in Richmond Park. There was no driving this time, but we did get around places in the Jaguar XJ L.

Famous for their giant shower heads, the well-appointed marble bathrooms are finished with large chrome fittings and Le Labo amenities. The chequered marble styling for our bathroom was classic. British royalty is incomplete without a butler and each suite gets one. The butler was of great help in getting the clothes quickly ironed and room cleaned.

Only down side was the fact that the butler entered the room when you don’t respond to a couple of knocks on the door. This was the absolute Jeeves moment. Unfortunately, our butler was Greek than British.

A British hotel without tea shop is incomplete? There is the Savoy Tea located in Upper Savoy Foyer, serving tea along with handmade jams, biscuits and patisserie. If you think it is time for a drink, then there is the famous American Bar. This is a lounge, which feels like any American high-end club and so are the drinks. The American Bar culture was once very famous in London and that is when this bar came up.

The American bar was given due to the American-style cocktails that were served. Dry martini might me a famous American cocktail but at Savoy,  Hanky Panky is one of the all-time favourites.

The Gordon Ramsay’s Savoy Grill is another legendary restaurant. It was very unfortunate of us to not visit it, due to our tight schedule. The Grill was originally “where people go to eat a modest luncheon or to dine on the way to the theatre without spending too much time or too much money.” The Thames Foyer serves breakfast, morning coffee, light lunch and supper, as well as afternoon tea, accompanied by the hotel’s resident pianist. The breakfast buffet isn’t widely spread as it focuses on English food and some continental dishes too. Egg-dishes, fruits and bread are the ideal breakfast choice at Savoy, not to forget the yogurts.

Savoy has a great history and the Hotel stands by its reputation. This is one of the oldest standing hotels with such a great history. Even if you don’t know the history, the stay here is delightful and extravagant. Just like visit to London is important, a stay at the Savoy is a mandate. It is expensive, but these will be moments you will cherish all your life.
