Buying a car can get tedious. One problem what kind of car to buy, then which car to buy and then we even need to decide the fuel type, transmission, variant and colour. If you are out in the market to buy a premium hatchback and have already zero-ed down on the Maruti Baleno. Now, the next step will be to decide between the Baleno petrol and Baleno diesel.

We help you get to the conclusion on which premium hatchback should you buy. We tell you the reason on which one to buy, in the Maruti Baleno petrol vs Baleno diesel comparison.

So diesel is your choice?

If you drive less than 1500kms a month (50kms a day), you don’t need a diesel.

The petrol engine is a lot more refined and are a lot more quiet and powerful. Yes, the diesel is more efficient, but it doesn’t mean it is cheaper to have a diesel engine unless you have a lot of running.

Maruti Baleno petrol vs Baleno diesel

Yes, diesel is cheaper to run. But diesel cars are more expensive. If you do not have too much running, petrol makes it an ideal pick. Let us look at a simple math: the Baleno costs about INR 1.25 lakh more than the diesel (when we consider on-road price). If you buy a car on EMI for five years, you pay an average of INR 10,000 (approximately) every year as an interest for that extra amount you have paid for the diesel engine. Now, at this price you pay INR 1.75 lakhs in total as an extra for a diesel car.

If your running is 1500kms a month (50 kms a day), your diesel cost for a day is about INR 150 a day (if we consider diesel as about INR 50 for a litre and 15km/l). So you spend about INR 4500 a month on diesel. For petrol, even we consider 10km/l, we do about INR 310 (with INR 62 for a litre of petrol). So, in the entire month it is about INR 9300. At about INR 4800 a month for petrol it will take you 175000/4800= 36 months.

The Delta and Zeta variants are the perfect variants to buy. If you think you can’t afford the Zeta, then the Delta variant is the ideal pick.

It gets dual airbags, music system, bluetooth connectivity, ABS and steering mounted audio controls. These are more than enough features on the Baleno. The Zeta variant gets some extras, like the push start and stop, driver seat height adjustment, driver information system with colour TFT, alloy wheels and UV cut glass. These are good, but the Delta is more than sufficient.
