Toyota Fortuner vs Isuzu MUX Design

New Toyota Fortuner 2017

In terms of styling, the Toyota Fortuner seems to be streamlined in design. The first-generation was a hit and the design had grown old. The new generation doesn’t look anywhere close to the outgoing version. The new Fortuner has slimmer headlamps, daytime running LEDs, 18-inch wheels and the sporty element carries to the rear as well. At the same time, the MUX looks bulky and has the styling that the old Fortuner had. It has road presence and it does stand out in the crowd. The styling of the MUX is similar to the Trailblazer as both have the same side profile. Both of them are based on the same platform with the same set of engines. Unfortunately there aren’t too many changes in the styling either.

Toyota Fortuner vs Isuzu MUX Interiors

New Toyota Fortuner 2016 interior

Here is where the Toyota has an upper hand. It does feel more premium and then also has more features. The Fortuner’s cabin is well laid out and it does look and feel modern. It has all the features like push start and stop, seven airbags, touchscreen system with reverse camera, navigation, bluetooth etc. The Fortuner’s all black interiors look plush and sporty. The space for the first two rows is good enough while that for the third row could have been a bit better. Yes an adult can sit in the third row, but it is a bit tight. The boot space is just fine for a SUV of this size with all seats raised.

On the other hand, Isuzu MUX’s interior looks basic compared to the Fortuner. The MUX has the same interiors like the V-Cross and even the features aren’t much. The Isuzu MUX offers dual airbags only as safety. The features included are keyless entry, push start and stop, reverse camera, bluetooth connectivity, leather upholstery. The interior fit and finish isn’t as appealing as the Fortuner or even the Endeavour. There is sufficient space in the first two rows of the SUV but it is the third row that is tight on space.

Toyota Fortuner vs Isuzu MUX Engine and Transmission

New Toyota Fortuner 2016 automatic

Let us first begin with the Fortuner. It has two engine options: one is a 2.7-litre petrol and the other a 2.8-litre diesel engine. Both these engines are offered with six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions. The Fortuner engines are new, have been downsized for better performance without compromise on mileage. There are 4×2 and 4×4 options available.

On the other hand, Isuzu does have a bigger diesel engine with 3.0-litre engine capacity. However it misses out on better power output and even torque. This is an old engine design as even the Tata Safari Storme has 400Nm of torque being offered from a 2.2-litre diesel engine. This engine comes with a five-speed automatic transmission. There are 4×2 and 4×4 options as well. So, the Fortuner does have an advantage over the MUX in performance.

Fuel efficiency (km/l) 13.8 12.9

Not the most important aspect, but still a valid pointer. In this also, the Fortuner has an advantage over the the MUX. Not only is the Fortuner lighter but it even has better performance from a smaller engine. Then there is also the six-speed box over the five-speed to add on to the advantage.

Toyota Fortuner vs Isuzu MUX – Which to pick?

Agreed that the Isuzu MUX is more affordable than the Fortuner. But this segment isn’t about the being cheaper. IT is about feeling premium and getting pampered by luxurious. In this case it is the Fortuner for more features and better engine. The Fortuner is also the better value for money package too, if we consider technology, bells and whistles and even the safety aspects.
