Jeep Compass has just been launched and the pricing of this SUV is very attractive. It is an all new SUV that is Jeep’s first made n India product. It does compete with the Hyundai Tucson in terms of equipment and size. The Hyundai Tucson, is also fairly new to the Indian market. So can the Jeep Compass beat the Hyundai Tucson? In terms styling, both the SUVs are quite different in their approach. While on one side, we have the Hyundai Tucson, which follows Hyundai’s Fluidic Design and looks more like a crossover. It nevertheless looks very premium with the stylish front and the large grille. The chrome slats make make it look very attractive and intimidating to an extent. The pulled back headlamps add some more style. Daytime running LEDs are also found on this vehicle. The Tucson looks very similar to the Santa Fe and share many design elements too. There is a clear resemblance amongst the two. The side profile is well-styled and the low profile tyres add more glamour.  The rear is similar to the Santa Fe and the tail lamps resemble that of the Elite i20.

On the other hand, Jeep Compass is a typical looking mid-size SUV that is quite butchy. It has a boxy design that make is look tough and has got curved edges. The styling of the Compass is heavily inspired by the Jeep Grand Cherokee. the seven slat front grille, pulled back headlamps and flat bonnet are typical of Jeep’s DNA. The SUV like looks come from these elements. The silhouette of the Compass is boxy to but comes with enough panache to make it a head turner. It is a capable off roader as it has short overhangs and sharp approach and departure angles. The tail lamps are LED ones and they do look stylish.

The cabin of the Hyundai Tucson is quiet pleasant. It doesn’t break new grounds but is well laid out just like all modern Hyundai cars. The black and beige interiors look stylish and appealing. A large touchscreen system adorns the centre of the dashboard. It comes with navigation, reverse camera, bluetooth and other features too. The instrument cluster is made up of twin dials and a driver information system too. The Tucson is big on interior space and offers very good leg room at the front and rear too. Especially in comparison to the Compass this one has more rear space.

The interiors of the Jeep Compass offer a very premium experience. The dashboard is simplistic but the quality is top notch. With soft touch finish, it does feel upmarket. It gets a 7-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple Car Play. There is dual zone climate control as well. The steering wheel is chunky and gets steering controls as well. The seats offer very good comfort. The rear is fairly spacious but three adults might find it a bit of a squeeze at the rear. Overall, the jeep Compass impresses more on the interior front.

Coming to engine options. the Hyundai Tucson gets a 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol churns about 153 horses and the diesel has about 183bhp. Both these engines are peppy and highly refined. These come with a six-speed manual and automatic options. Hyundai Tucson comes only with a front-wheel drive option and there is no 4WD option. This options the only Hyundai to offer that is the Santa Fe. In terms of power and refinement, this is one of the most quietest engines around. The engines have good performance and are easy to drive in the city or even on the highway.

The Compass on the other hand has a 1.4-litre MultiAir turbo petrol and 2.0-litre MultiJet diesel engine on offer. These engines are at par with the Hyundai mills as the petrol produces 160bhp and the diesel is at 170bhp of power. Both these engines will come with a six-speed manual gearbox and there will also be a seven-speed dual clutch transmission on offer, however, this will be available only on the petrol. The diesel is expected to come later with a nine-speed automatic.

The diesel engine is very punchy and offers good performance. The petrol is also more powerful as compared to the Tucson. Additionally, The Compass comes with an option of 4WD, which also has different modes. This makes the Compass surge ahead of the Tucson in terms of transmission options.

The Hyundai Tucson has a pliant ride however, it feels stiff at low speeds. It comes with double damping. High speed stability is good and body roll also is quite reduced. The steering response  and handling leaves a lot to be desired though.

The Jeep Compass is a cut above the Tucson is this department and beats the Tucson in terms of ride and handling. The ride quality is much superior at any speeds and also the handling gives a reassured feeling. The steering response is very impressive and gives proper feedback from the road.

The Jeep Compass starts at around ₹16.5 lakhs (on-road) and goes upto ₹ 22.5 lakhs for the 4WD diesel top end variant. At this price it undercuts the Tucson by a big margin. Whle the tucson offers powerful engines, good number of features, more space and a stylish urban SUV looks, the Jeep competes head-on with equal or more powerful engines and additionally comes with a 4WD option, which Tucson does not offer. The Compass also offers better driving pleasure than the Tucson.  So, there is little to choose from and the Jeep Compass is a clear winner when it comes to picking one.
