Tata Motors is working on downsizing its 2.2-litre VariCOR engine to meet the requirements of the NCR diesel ban. As per the rule, one cannot have a diesel car on sale if it is above 2.0-litre of displacement. Mahindra has already resized its 2.2-litre engine to a 1.99-litre and the Scorpio and XUV500 are now once again on sale in New Delhi.

Tata Motors too had announced that it will be working on downsizing its 2.2-litre engine as it powers the Safari Storme and some more UVs. The company has started working on this but it will not be out before 2017.

The new upcoming Hexa will also be launched with the 2.2-litre diesel engine, meaning that Tata cannot sell it in the National Capital.

Mahindra is also working towards introducing petrol engines on the Scorpio and the XUV500 for the Indian car market. They are already exporting it to other markets with this engine.

Now, it seems that Tata Motors will also have to get into petrol engines once again. The Tata Safari Storme, Hexa and even the Xenon will be the three fresh products in the Tata UV stable. There will be a Nexon too, but not before 2017.
