Maruti has been working on an array of new small cars and there has been no hiding in that. We have got the sketch of the new-generation Maruti small car. This new hatchback has retro looks and looks a lot similar to the Mini. As we had mentioned in our of our earlier posts, Maruti will be blending its small car design with a mix of modern and retro styling. The new Alto Kei that was revealed in Japan also has retro styling.

The Alto Kei’s design won’t be coming to India, as Maruti has been designing this vehicle in-house. The new Maruti small car will be powered by a 660cc petrol engine and even except the 660cc turbo to be launched. The 796cc engine might be discontinued. The 1.0-litre K-Series engine will be replaced by the 660cc turbo engine. The AMT version will also be launched on the Alto with the 660cc turbo engine.

Maruti Suzuki is one of the first automakers to have taken downsizing across all its models. These new engines will deliver similar power like the 800cc petrol and at the same time they will enhance the fuel-efficiency. Maruti is working on a new Alto and a new crossover too. This will be competing with the Renault Kwid that has higher ground clearance and more interior space. The new Maruti hatchback will be made for Indian market and the company is also looking at exporting it to other developing markets. From what we understand this could be the new-generation Alto and there will also be a crossover that will be derived on this platform.

All the new Maruti small cars will have better fuel-efficiency, performance, space and even features. The interior space and boot space on the new Maruti vehicles will be enhanced.

If we look at this sketch itself, the large front and rear doors indicate that the hatchback will be spacious on the inside. There will be no compromise in terms of space and even features. Expect features like touchscreen infotainment system, maps, electrically adjustable mirrors, dual airbags and ABS as to be there on this new hatchback. The length of this new hatchback will be 3500mm. At the same time, the new platform for small cars will be lighter and yet more rigid. The new plant that will be set-up in Gujarat will be completely owned by Suzuki, however it will be giving the vehicles to Maruti Suzuki at the same cost. The Japanese automaker wants to set-up a base in India to export to other markets. It is looking at shifting some of its production from Japan to India, as it is more more affordable due to lower worker wages. The new Suzuki plant should be functional by 2017.
