Tata Motors has more than doubled its investment in product development in the last five years. The brand is now developing an advanced modular platform (codenamed as AMP) that it will be using for the Indian car market in the future. This platform will be churning out a hatchback and a notchback as the first two products. These will be in the segment of Grand i10 and XCent. These will be powered by a new generation petrol and diesel engines that are under development. There will also be AMT (automated manual transmission) on offer as well. These products will be hitting the market in 2019.

The investment in the product development expense (P&L) and amortization of product development cost for FY15 was INR 25.7 billion and INR 51.2 billion respectively, when compared to FY11, when it was INR 10 billion and INR 10.6 billion. The brand is working on three new platforms in total including the AMP. The other two platforms include Raptor and Harrier. These two will churn out UVs and crossovers. The brand is looking at increasing its global footprint and will the Harrier platform’s two SUVs, it will commence exports. These two SUVs will be powered by Fiat’s bigger range of multijet engines and the annual production of each will be about 50,000 units.

The Raptor on the other hand will churn out affordable SUVs for rural India. Every year, the brand will be launching two new products and this will be going on till 2020. Tata Motors will be flooding the market with its new range of products to enhance its portfolio, which was stagnant for a while. The next launch is the Kite hatchback, which will be launched in January 2016.
