It was in 2014 when Deepak Ahuja, the Chief Financial Officer at Tesla Motors had revealed that the electric car maker was considering rapid expansion plans beyond United States & European markets. Asia, he conceded, was a prime candidate & India featured heavily on their radar.

Well, it is 2015 and the company seems to be right on track. Tesla Motors is indeed exploring an operation where they begin their Indian stint with assembly operations for their Model 3. This car is currently manufactured in the Netherlands and sold primarily in the European Markets.

Given the high import duties around electric cars, Tesla officials are currently in consultation with the Indian Government to try and rationalize duties. Additionally, they are also exploring a separate categorization that would help the development of electric cars here. While a full-fledged manufacturing plant might come under consideration sometime in the future, it is going to be the assembly plant that’s the way forward for now.

Tesla is aware of the numbers for the Indian market, given that they would be a niche operator in the luxury vehicle segment. But, with a local assembly plant, the manufacturer would be able to export cars assembled in India, to key markets in the lucrative Asian region.
