Last time we had reported that Chevrolet has been working a new Honda City competition product for India, however it has been working towards developing a platform for the Indian car market, which will churn out a premium hatchback and a sedan too. The sedan will be competing with the Honda City and the premium hatchback will be somewhere between Swift and Elite i20 in size.

These products will be developed and will even be manufactured at the company’s Talegaon plant.

Our sources state that this new platform will be based on the Gamma platform (which was developed by Fiat and GM) and the current Punto is on a similar modular platform. There will be some tweaks in the platform and it will be coming with a 1.2-litre petrol and 1.3-litre diesel engine for the hatchback and the sedan will be a bigger petrol and more powerful diesel engine too.

As the Gamma platform is similar to Fiat’s modular platform, and both the plants are in the vicinity it will become easier for General Motors to source vendor for a similar set of parts. The Spin Activ (which is the SUV-based on the Spin platform) is coming next year with a tail gate that is similar to that on the Avventura. This will come with a frame and it will be slide open and then the boot will hatch.

Chevrolet had announced it will be launching 10 new products in the next five years. “The new global vehicle family we just announced will have several different body styles designed to meet the expectations of the Indian consumer,” said GM International President Stefan Jacoby.  “The vehicles will be manufactured and sold in India and feature striking styling that has never been seen here before. They will also be exported worldwide.
