Honda Cub will be the new entry-level scooter –EXCLUSIVE

Honda Cub to be the scooter for rural market.

Honda has been working on a new affordable, which will become the new entry-level to the brand.

One of our sources has confirmed that this bike will be called as the Honda Cub, a name that the Japanese bike maker had used for its old mopeds.

Honda will be targeting the rural market with this scooter to outrun the mopeds that are sort of underpowered.

Honda Cub and Super Cub were moped and bike respectively that the company sold in the 50s. Honda has been working on a new smaller engine ideally the already existing 100cc engine to modify it to a good extent for even better power and fuel efficiency. The body style of the Cub, will be a lot similar to the Honda BeAT, which we had mentioned about yesterday.

Honda might not be able to use BeAT as Chevrolet would have the name registered under its name, but however this new scooter will be heavily modified for Indian consumer requirements and to compete with the mopeds. All depends on how well does Honda prices this scooter, we believe it should be about INR 45 thousand on-road.

With this aggressive pricing, rural buyers would shift to a scooter than a moped. This will also become the more affordable scooter that is currently available in India. Honda is far ahead of competition in the scooter segment and one it wants to extend its lead to the rural markets as well. The Cub will have 14-inch wheels and shall weigh under 100 kilograms. This will a stylish and yet affordable scooter for the rural buyers. At the moment, there is no competition in this segment and Honda will have the advantage.

In an interview with afaqs also, Honda’s vice president, sales and marketing, Yadvinder Singh Guleria, “We want to connect with rural consumers. For the past eight to nine years, Honda has spoken only to urban consumers. We are now aiming to engage with the rural community by talking to them in their language, providing them with a touch-and-feel of the product. We won’t bore them with talks of our legacy. Retaining consumers and expanding our presence in the automatic scooter market are priorities.”

So, one can expect Honda to get Super Cub in the future as its new 100cc bike, if this is what the plan is. Honda will also be introducing the Sport Production version of the CB Shine and call it the CB Shine SP. Our sources have confirmed again on the same, as we had mentioned in our earlier story. Honda Cub should be launched in the second half of 2015.
